VooDoo3 2000 no big change...

VooDoo3 2000 no big change...

by Jim Teste » Fri, 29 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Ok...I just installed a new Voodoo3 2000 PCI in an AMD K6 2-350 "3D Now".
And I'm not all that impressed.  I should be impressed, so there must be
something I'm doing wrong.  My old 3D card was the "Monster 3D"...the
original first version.

I didn't get an appreciable jump in frame rates over my Monster 3D.  It
would run around 15 to 20 fpms running around Dega.  Now the new Voodoo 3
2000 is showing a few frames higher...about 17 to 22 fpms.  Is this normal
to have only a few frame rate jump?

Also...I did Disable my onboard ATI Rage Pro with no problem.  It's showing
a big red "X" in the properties section for it in the Device Manager.

But...after I uninstalled my Monster 3D, I thought the tabs would be gone in
my Display settings.  They're still there.  I can even do the same tests on
it that I could before.  The new Voodoo 3 has it's own tabs displayed too.

How do I get rid of the Monster 3D tabs.  I checked my Registry, and it
still shows the Monster as one of the display adapters.  So apparently it
didn't "Uninistall" completely.

I downloaded and installed the newest drivers for the Voodoo 3.  And also
DirectX 7.

One note...my FS98 Flight Simulator runs a LOT smoother on the new Voodoo 3.
And it doubled in frame rates from the old Monster 3D.  So it's working fine
on that one.  And my GPL runs smoother too...although everything is a lot
darker.

After reading this book...are there any suggestions out there for me?

Thanks in advance...

I don't think you'll be happy until you upgrade your cpu to something with a
decent floating point, like a celeron or PII.  I have an AMD K6 2-400 using
a Voodoo3 3000 and it doesn't do as well as my PII-333 using a Voodoo2.

You will need to upgrade your main unit. The K6 or any non Intel cpu cause
less performance from the Voodoo boards (all 3 series). With the Celeron 400
and the V3 2000 1024*768 GPL has 35-37 frames (except the start) while N3
rocks around 30 frames...

VooDoo3 2000 no big change...

I suspect you should remove all of your Monster 1 drivers, then re-install the
V3 drivers.  The following procedure for removing the Monster 1 drivers is from
the Diamond page:

http://www.diamondmm.com/products/faqs/current/monster_fusion-faq.htm...

"You need to remove the original Voodoo Graphics card and clean out all the old
references to the card.

3Dfx provides an .INF file to remove these references. It can be found here:
           http://www.3dfx.com/view_io.asp?ID=96

Alternatively, you can follow these steps:

Go to Start, Run, and type: regedit

In the registry editor under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum/PCI delete the VEN_121A&DEV folder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software delete the 3Dfx Interactive Folder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Diamond delete the Monster3D folder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/ControlsFolder/Display/shellex/Property Sheet Handlers delete the
folders pertaining to the original voodoo card

Then in c:\windows\inf\other delete any *.inf file pertaining to the Monster3D,
3Dfx Interactive, the Monster Fusion, etc.

Then, make sure your system is setup to show all hidden files (in windows
explorer, click on view, options, folder options, and select show all files)

Then go to Start, Find, Files or Folders and search for glide on the C: drive
searching all sub-folders. Delete anything you find.

Then search for dd3dfx.drv, dd3dfx16.dll, and dd3dfx32.dll and mm3dfx*.*, delete
them if you find them.

Then search for fxmemmap.vxd and delete it as well.

Then search for SST1INIT*.* and delete it as well."

Then restart your computer and install your V3 drivers again.  Hope this helps.

VooDoo3 2000 no big change...

by R Alexande » Sun, 31 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I had a similar experience.  Using AMD 450 and Asus P5 ab motherboard I find
my framerates only went up by about 2 frames with the Voodoo3 3000 AGP card
over my Voodoo 2 card.  Part of the problem lies in not being able to use
triple burrering (maybe) and I am also perplexed by not being able to enable
"delayed transaction" in BIOS.  Perhaps we have to live with this in the AMD
world.
