Which?: MOMO Original with ACT Labs Pedals and Shifter or New MOMO

by Marc Collin » Fri, 08 Nov 2002 12:17:08

If money is a factor, then I assume everyone could get by with the new
plastic MOMO.  But is the old MOMO "wheel," Act-Labs "pedals" and "shifter"
the ultimate mainstream combo for high quality?

How much better is one vs. the other?  I am perhaps crazily considering the
old MOMO while I can still get one and adding the Act-Labs stuff.  It will
be more than double the price of the new MOMO, which won't have a clutch
pedal.

If I could try the new MOMO first, it would make the decision a lot easier,
but I fear that by the time I can do that, the old MOMO will be gone.  Every
store I have talked to has it on recall in anticipation of getting the new
one in.

Anyone use the old MOMO and Act-Labs combo?  Is it as great as it sounds?

Thanks,

Marc (with birthday approaching)

Bear in mind that the new momo shifter is a sequential jobbie - i.e.
forward and back only - and you might answer your own question.  My
Act-Labs pedals are boxed up for Christmas (only way my wife would let
me have them) but I tried them briefly to make sure they worked.  They
are *vastly* superior to the orginal MOMO unit.  The travel means the
pedals end up a little too horizontal compared to what I'm used to,
but I'm sure I'll manage somehow.  Currently I use TM NASCAR Pro
pedals and T2 gas pedal for clutch.

Once you've experienced driving GPL/N2K2 with clutch and real shift
action, you will not want to go back.  It adds to the immersion factor
almost as much as upgrading to a wheel in the first place...

My main concern with the shifter is where to put it/how to mount it.  One
built-in to the wheel would be a lot more convenient.

Does it work in sequential mode, too (since most modern cars need that)?
What are the mounting options?  Couldn't tell much from the web site.

Thanks,

Marc

I was sure the ACT LABS would be better than the MOMO pedals...but how much
better are they than good pedals (like the Ferrari or perhaps even the new
MOMO)?  Am I correct that I will still have to have the MOMO pedals***
around somewhere because that's where the power connector is?

I really like the Thrustmaster pedals I've got and the TM Ferrari ones look
very similar.  It's horses for courses, but the TM pedals are in a DIFFERENT
LEAGUE to the original MOMOs.  I'd even go as far to say the gas and brake
have better feel the the Act-Labs...  Maybe it just because that's what I'm
used to.  Can't comment on the new MOMO pedals.

The original MOMO pedals are, IMO, complete and utter rubbish.  A waste of
floorspace.  Please note I use a clutch so use left and right foot braking.
If you are only gonna left foot brake then they may seem not so bad.

If you can get by with a screwdriver I'm sure you could get rid of the pedal
base, but to be honest I keep it wired up and shifted out the way just in
case I a) have a driving game I like that doesn't support multiple
controllers (like when LFS first appeared) or b) ever get a console that
supports USB controllers...

There was a sequential shift plate which I believe is discontinued.  As for
mounting, the shifter gets screwed to a bracket that goes under the wheel
and is held in place by the wheel clamping mechanism.  It can be set up for
either left or right side use.  I have had no problems with this mounting
solution.

Take a look at this page to find out how the MOMO is wired, and how you can
get rid of the pedals.

I agree about the Ferrari pedals...I love them.  Incredibly high resolution
brake pedal which allows for accurate braking in GPL.

Thanks for the comments about the MOMO pedals--I guess they are basically
the same as the regular Logi pedals, which are crap.

Wow...is there anything "we" can't do to make our enjoyment of sims perfect?

Thanks for the incredible link!

I need and want a sequential shifting option, so if they don't have that,
they will have lost a sale.
