GPL - Can't get any servers on SpyBoy...

by Scott Boha » Sat, 13 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I have installed GPL SpyBoy on my friends computer, but whenever it
loads, there are never any servers visible.  He has exactly the same setup
as me, the latest version of SpyBoy, and the 1.2 patch for GPL.

I can click on the refresh button, but nothing comes up on the server
window.
You can see the chat messages though, which means that there must be
a connection.  I just don't understand it.

Any suggestions welcome...

Don't know if this will help or not but if you are running Win 95 you may
need to upgrade to winsock 2 from the Microsoft website.

No, we are both running the identical release of Windows 98.

Thanks anyway.

I found that the best thing to do when this happens is to close SpyBoy
down and then restart it.  This has cured it everytime for me.

I get this problem sometimes too but if you wait they will show up eventually.
It might have something to do with the number of people and races going on
since it takes longer for the list to appear when there are more races going.

Scott

It could have something to do with the SpyBoy bug in the most recent version.
(1.2 came out too quickly, I guess.)  I can't race in GSB anymore, so I chat
there, then join races through vroc.  I'll keep doing this until the fix is
out.

No no no,

I mean it **NEVER** comes up.  I mean, on my computer, sometimes you have to
wait a minute or so for the list to come up, but most times it's fairly
quick.  But on my
friends computer it has NEVER come up.  Also, when mine is waiting for the
list, it
says 'Requesting current race list from VROC' but it doesn't even say that
on his
computer.

We have identical versions of windows, GPL and GSB, and as far as I can
tell, they
are all setup in the same way.

Weird????

Make sure you look at the race list not the GSB adressbook (the
VROC/Adr.book  tabs at top left corner). I belive GSB defaults to the adress
book when installed and your description indicates that you are looking at
it.

GPL - Can't get any servers on SpyBoy...

by Terry Welc » Tue, 16 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I installed GPL1.2 this weekend, and ran it via VROC2 successfully,
without the use of SpyBoy, at least until apparently my IE5 or winsock
or something got hosed during an online race.  Now I can't access VROC2
without the main VROC window on my IE5 freezing but, have not yet had
time to analyze the problem and clear it.

Anyway, with VROC2 it seemed that until the Refresh button came on full
time if I clicked the MOTD button no races showed and got a message
saying that no races were available, though some were.  If I wait for
both buttons to show solidly before clicking MOTD, the current race list
comes up just fine.  That usually takes upwards of 1-3 minutes, and
several cycles of the "loading races" message.

If I can get the IE5 problem cured (or just install NetScape as a sorry
workaround), I will try it with SpyBoy and see if the same problems
occur.  Also will keep watching r.a.s. for other responses to your post.

GPL - Can't get any servers on SpyBoy...

I posted this about a week ago, but here it goes again if you haven't
tried it:

I had that same problem. Haven't been on GSB for months since I could
never se any races there.

But today I tried the new GSB2 beta. It didn't work again, just as it
didn't for you, but by mere coincident I went into options while I was
still online and checked that I got the GPL-folder right. It was
alright, but when I clicked OK, all of a sudden all the races popped
up!

Can't explain why (bug?), but it worked for me. Finally. Try it.

I have this problem with IE4 - which is up to date enough by the way -
in that I cannot access the Vroc racelist through my web browser without
my whole computer freezing.  I'm only guessing here but it seems to stem
from the java applet, because when I restart and run Scandisk it finds
the same size data block in error - something like 143,000 bytes - and
when I've examined this data block it has the word "java" all the way
through it.

I can still race online through SpyBoy though so I've just stopped using
the Vroc web site to join races.
