Keep an eye on my GPL site and The APEX over the next few days; we hope
to announce a new development which will help people find each other to
race on line.  GPL does not have the ability to remotely control a GPL
server, but it does have a hook that allows us to remotely query a GPL
server for status, and we are building a matchmaking facility around
this feature.  It will be roughly analagous to TEN or The Zone, but
entirely Web-based, implemented with Java and CGI.  And free.

Using a dedicated server won't necessarily help the frame rate on the
clients, but for a number of reasons, it's an advantage to have GPL
hosted on a machine with a high speed connection to the Internet, such
as a cable modem.  If the machine is run as a dedicated server (i.e. no
one drives on the machine running the GPL server) then graphics can be
turned down, and a fairly slow machine (200-233 mhz) is adequate.

Excellent!  Looking forward to it :)

I have a question related to on-line play:  I have a one-way cable modem
that rocks on the download (I get 4Mbps) but only 28.8kbps on the upload.
How will this do in a multiplayer on-line race?  I suspect everything
will be great for me, but how about the others?
