GPL : is there a grip patch ?

by porsch.. » Thu, 25 Nov 1999 04:00:00

hi folks,

I have recently returned to GPL hoping it would have been patched since
I gave up. It has, for multiplaying and Force feedback, but I was
hoping some adventurous soul might have hacked the game and produced
something like a high grip patch or something... I still am confused
when my car seems to be going at 40 mph yet spins 8 times ! ;-)

Not an attack on the game, I know the modeling is superb, but is there
some "fix" available to those of us who want the great opposite lock
fun but better tires and brakes ? (and haven't got 5 hours a day to get
really good) ;-)

No grip patch that I know of, but if you havent downloaded the 1.2 patch
yet, that might make things easier for you.  Most people think it's a bit
easier than 1.0, plus the new default setups are better.  You can get it at
www.papy.com.

I am affraid: no there is no such patch (at least I've never heard of
one). GPL is very difficult to drive, but if you get used to it, you'll
love it! the key is: be smooth! you will always spin with the
hard'n'heavy driving style you've probably learned with indycar or GP2
...

What should also be said is that if you drive any other sim than GPL for
a while, then go back to GPL, you're back to being a spinning novice
again!

(Just done that with playing RC2000 then going back to GPL!)

Or even go away from GPL without driving anything at all. I was away for a
business-trip for 6 days, and I was ***after that.

The coolest thing is to go from heavy GPL'ing to ICR2 or GP2. You can go really
fast in those sims because of the skill you learn in GPL.

Try the F3 [Trainer] cars for online racing and/or just getting a grip on
GPL's engine.  They have less rpms to deal with, less horsepower and really
stress ability to drive the line around the track to go fast.

How true!  After I got Grand Prix Legends and started going fast on it (I'm up
to 1:04.88 at Watkins Glen in a Lotus, still more in the car), I started
winning races in my ICR2 offline league, and then won the championship.  :)

Good question, but I don't think so. Had Papyrus included such an
option originally (and called it arcade mode) I'm convinced the game
would have sold ten times as many copies.

Hi!

If you're hot for "opposite-lock-fun" you'd better get that DTR-Demo ;))

That's so true.

For me the worst is to try Icr2 after a couple of hours of GPL.  It really
takes me half an hour before I go back to my normal total control of those
Champ cars.  It's still similar titles imho.  You can use the same technique
for both because even if it's different game engine, there is a core that is
the same, you know.. the "Papyrus touch".  The best way to find that is to
race Monaco and try Australia in Icr2.  Try to trailbrake at Surfer's
Paradise and you can easily go under the 1:30's.  And they say it's only a
game...   ;)

Thank God they didn't include OPTIONS to make the game accessible?
What an odd opinion. Who knows, if they had we might be seeing other
GPL-engine games by now, or GPL add-on packs.

Maybe offline this might be the case but it would wreck online racing
forever.

If just one person showed up on VROC with such a patch it would mean
curtains to over a year of work for everybody else!

I'm full of odd opinions :)

I think they even shouldn't have included the automatic gear and
braking help. GPL is a sim, it should be as authentic as possible.
Only really talented drivers should be able to win.
If options like more grip and easier AI were standard included, most
people even wouldn't have tried the realistic settings. Perhaps for a
little while, but then comming to the conclusion that the realistic
settings are 'impossible to drive'.
Now everybody's forced to learn GPL as it is, with the full physics.
Everybody who races online uses the same physics.

Maybe the group of GPL fans is smaller because of lack of these
options, but I'm afraid that if 'easier' options would have been
included, we would mostly see online races with the easier settings
enabled.

Told you I had odd opinions.

Absolutely not if they divide both type of racing in different areas.  Like
per example Fighter Ace (a WW2 online sim on zone.com), you have a flight
model that is realistic and also a flight model that is arcade.  Both have
separate rooms and you cannot fly in arcade more in the sim arenas, and
vice-versa.

Same can be said also on the NROS or currently on won.net.  N2 and N3 both
have arcade modes but it hasn't wreck online racing forever.  It's for
another reason that it's bad ;)   (mainly stupid Sierra decisions, not
Papyrus).
