Most people DIDN'T try the realistic settings, nor any other settings
for that matter. IMO that's why there have been no new GPL-engine
games, which is a shame.

Yeah, all ten of you! ;-)

Indeed - I think it's the very fact that GPL forces you to use the
very hard physics model which caused it commercial problems and further
gave the idea that "accurate sim" is commercial death.  Some arcade
options on GPL could have increased its sales without harming to a great
degree the majority of the r.a.s. crowd who want reality at all costs.

Instead, we have one great game but seemingly no possibility of
anything approaching it in realism in the forseeable future.  (Note,
I said realism, not enjoyability - there are a number of enjoyable
driving games about).

Dan,

I've driven against you and other hot shoes. I still can't figure out
how you guys go that fast. When I try and use your turning in and braking
points. I go straight off the track.

Not if they had only allowed easier options for offline racing and
ensured that all online racing would have to use the full Gpl physics.
Obviously Papy would have had to ensure that the code wasn't easily
hackable so that the offline modes were not easily enabled when racing
online.

>>>Thank God they didn't...

>>Thank God they didn't include OPTIONS to make the game accessible?
>>What an odd opinion. Who knows, if they had we might be seeing other
>>GPL-engine games by now, or GPL add-on packs.

But what would be the point?  It's the same elitist attitude coming
through again.  Make it accessible for offline racing *and* make it
accessible for online racing.  Why shouldn't people be able to choose an
easier model for online racing against others of their skill level?  As
has been mentioned before, there are arcade races for NASCAR and
sim-setting races for NASCAR.  Either make it impossible to hack the code
to allow easy settings in a  "hard" online race (which is difficult, as
there is always some genius) or quickly establish leagues where you know
and trust your competitors.

<snip>

I tend to think that if this were possible then, in open online races
such as on vroc, everything would tend to drop down to the lowest common
denominator, with more and more people having to ease up on the
difficulty level just to stay competitive.  Eventually it would just
become a lottery.

At the moment most people are happy with Vroc because they are sure that
we're all playing on the same level playing field.  As soon as there is
even a suspicion of someone having an 'unfair' advantage look how quick
people (myself included) are ready to cry 'foul' - remember the recent
post here with regard to the guy who was running 59s laps at the Glen.

Of course if the server end could stipulate what sort of Gpl physics
were allowed then that would be fine.

A lot of it has to do with your car setup, your car make, and your ability to
control braking.  Get very *** the brakes at first, and then ease off just
enough to where the tires squeal some but the wheels are still moving and not
leaving skidmarks behind you.

I know that, sorry, that's not what I was looking for. F3 cars have
equally sucky brakes and tires and since their speed is lower, the
impression is even worse 'cause now I feel like I'm doing 20 mph when
they spin. Something to do with the poor impression of speed from gpl
(hey, that's the game's only realism flaw as far as I am concerned).
And F3 cars do not have enough power to catch a slide like F2/F1 do...

OK< so I guess there is no patch of any kind. Too bad. Thanks !

DTR is "Dirt Track Racing" -- this is the latest racing title from
Ratbag and Wizard Works.  The physics are quite excellent, IMO -- maybe
not quite up to the GPL level, but definitely a contender in the
physics arena (in the same league as Viper Racing and GPL, I would
say).

The demo is probably one of the best 9 MB downloads ever.  It includes
3 tracks and all 3 types of cars that appear in the full version (pure
Stocks, Pro Stocks, and Late Models).  The online *** is excellent
using the included version of DTR GamespyLite, and Kali also supports
the DTR demo and the full version. Check out the demo at:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

The Stocks and Pro Stocks modeled in the game are great, but the Late
Models (the top level car in the game) REALLY rock.
