I don't think I've had so much clothed fun since..well a while.
Daytona Night
5 cars start the race, 2 drop off the pace early leaving three of
us to race to the finish. Nerves give way to cautious enthusiam
very quickly as I realise the fixed setups and the restrictor plate
racing will help keep relative speeds controllable...now to just
keep it on the track...
5 laps in - I'm amazed...I'm on this guys tail like he's an AI car..
but he's real. I'm using cable from Australia and playing on a
Papy server so all the more impressive.
1 and 2 swap positions, during the pass, i have more speed than
the both of them but sit back - not 100% certain I can make the
pass. They swap back.
10 laps in, within a car length on 2nd place, a black and yellow
#25 car, I'm confident I can hold a high or low line, so it's time
to make a move.
Doing the smoothest lap I can, I get in position and edge my nose
in low. my competition gives me racing room and we go 3/4 of
a lap side by side until my inside position gives me the edge. All
the time I'm gripping the wheel intensely working 100% to keep
my line and not drift up the track into my opponent. I get the call
coming out of turn 2 that I'm clear and let the car drift right out to
the concrete.
Into 2nd position now! - I can't believe I've pulled off a pass, but
the flash of yellow in my mirror reminds me that nothing is forever.
I don't want to go for the lead just yet - I have more pace than
the leader (I realise why later on) and I look high and low for
opportunities. I know I can almost pass the leader out of turn 2
or maybe into turn 1 but riskier because I'd had to go high...
but not yet not yet... I bide my time until the call is 5 laps to go
and I look for the high pass with a few miles an hour on the
leader. mistake...
Suddenly it dawns on me why my opponent has been slower..
He's turning more gently, conserving tires and keeping heat
down - all this as my car gently but unerringly understeers up to the
high wall (me in damage and carspeed conservation mode)
and gives it a gentle scrape...my bonnet had equal with the leaders
rear wheel and now I was watching #25 come barrelling back
through on the inside. Through turn 1 and opening into turn 2,
I knew I could keep the power down if I could turn in harder but
#25 was still down low. No choice :( . Forced to lift
for a instant to get around before the wall, #25 flies past on the
inside and I dive in behind desperate to grab the draft.
We ran the last 3 laps flat out - me rueing my overzealous passing
early on as my RF started to really let go. In the end, the three
cars crossed the line closer than the race had started. My RF
burst under brakes after the finish line. If I had played my cards
more carefully, I could have had the grip I needed in the last few
laps to try and change the outcome. This is stored knowledge
now so watch out ;)
Anyway - I don't see that many race stories around on this group
any more and that was awesome - so I thought I'd share it. even
with only three of us. It was clean, fast and on the edge. Thanks
to my fellow racers...I'll be back
