i'd heard this was fun (N4 online racing story)

I just finished my first online race with N4.

I don't think I've had so much clothed fun since..well a while.

Daytona Night

5 cars start the race, 2 drop off the pace early leaving three of
us to race to the finish.  Nerves give way to cautious enthusiam
very quickly as I realise the fixed setups and the restrictor plate
racing will help keep relative speeds controllable...now to just
keep it on the track...

5 laps in - I'm amazed...I'm on this guys tail like he's an AI car..
but he's real.  I'm using cable from Australia and playing on a
Papy server so all the more impressive.

1 and 2 swap positions, during the pass, i have more speed than
the both of them but sit back - not 100% certain I can make the
pass.  They swap back.

10 laps in, within a car length on 2nd place, a black and yellow
#25 car, I'm confident I can hold a high or low line, so it's time
to make a move.

Doing the smoothest lap I can, I get in position and edge my nose
in low.  my competition gives me racing room and we go 3/4 of
a lap side by side until my inside position gives me the edge.  All
the time I'm gripping the wheel intensely working 100% to keep
my line and not drift up the track into my opponent.  I get the call
coming out of turn 2 that I'm clear and let the car drift right out to
the concrete.

Into 2nd position now! - I can't believe I've pulled off a pass, but
the flash of yellow in my mirror reminds me that nothing is forever.

I don't want to go for the lead just yet - I have more pace than
the leader (I realise why later on) and I look high and low for
opportunities.  I know I can almost pass the leader out of turn 2
or maybe into turn 1 but riskier because I'd had to go high...
but not yet not yet...  I bide my time until the call is 5 laps to go
and I look for the high pass with a few miles an hour on the
leader.  mistake...

Suddenly it dawns on me why my opponent has been slower..
He's turning more gently, conserving tires and keeping heat
down - all this as my car gently but unerringly understeers up to the
high wall (me in damage and carspeed conservation mode)
and gives it a gentle scrape...my bonnet had equal with the leaders
rear wheel and now I was watching #25 come barrelling back
through on the inside.  Through turn 1 and opening into turn 2,
I knew I could keep the power down if I could turn in harder but
#25 was still down low.  No choice :( .  Forced to lift
for a instant to get around before the wall, #25 flies past on the
inside and I dive in behind desperate to grab the draft.

We ran the last 3 laps flat out - me rueing my overzealous passing
early on as my RF started to really let go.  In the end, the three
cars crossed the line closer than the race had started.  My RF
burst under brakes after the finish line.  If I had played my cards
more carefully, I could have had the grip I needed in the last few
laps to try and change the outcome.  This is stored knowledge
now so watch out ;)

Anyway - I don't see that many race stories around on this group
any more and that was awesome - so I thought I'd share it.  even
with only three of us.  It was clean, fast and on the edge.  Thanks
to my fellow racers...I'll be back

I'll share mine from yesterday, even though it's GPL and not my first race.
I 've been training for my League race at Monza, and late last night i ran a
good race in vroc with avg. lap times around 1:29.5 except for two laps
behind a slower car.  The remainder of the race there was a constant gap of
5 secs. to the car i nfront and I ended 5th. I felt I was hot and some of us
went out again. I qulified 4th, but the guy in third got disconnected. The
two guys in front of me are racing inhigher divisions than me in the league,
so I wondered if I was gonna be left badly behind. I made a good start an
ran consistent in the low to mid 1:29s and the gap for the first laps was
only 1 sec. to the next guy infront of me. then the gap opens up to 2 secs.
but the following lap I close right up, and the next lap, I pass them both
as they go slow. Maybe they had a run in. Im in an Eagle, and they are both
in Lotus. I come up to S/F and hope to see L2 or something, but there is 6
laps left, and A Lotus closing fast. With a Lotus in mig gearbox and with a
better driver behind the wheel, I begin to sweat, and concentrate like mad.
I get a less than good exit from Parabolica and the Lotus in my draft
quickly comes up on my rigth side. Drag race all teh way to T1. He has the
inside line, but has to break a little earlier. I want to brake late, but
leave it a littel to late, and my left rear catches the grass and pulls me
into the armco, and I slide all the way round, lifting off. Dont want to go
into the racing line, and take the other guys out, so I let tehm borh pass
before I brake free. I'm still close though. Into the first Lesmo I see the
teo guys infront have crashed. I brake all I can, and almost stop before
hitting the car standing up against the rail. I'm unhurt, and so is the car,
heart pounding I go after the next guy, and he's slow, so I pass him easily.
Only a couple og laps left and I am in 1st. The Lotus is quickly gaining on
me, as I back of a little, not wanting to throw it away. in the last laps.
On the final lap, the Lotus is all the way up my slipstream and it takes all
the concentration I have, too keep my cool, and keep him behind. I fly ower
the line with the Lotus 2/100 of a second behind. My first Vroc victory.
(except for that on E?dred's Novice server) Ok, so the guys in front helped
me with a crash or two, but I drove consistantly. Not counting the lap with
the crash, I was all low 1:29s. I was mighty pleased with myself when I went
to bed.

Great story. Now, just wait until there are 30 people in that race and you
qualify and have to start from mid-pack. Hehe, that will be a different
experience...

Good luck, thanks for sharing.

Well, I think that just about sums up how to do it, eh?

Congrats, JL :-)

Good Story, you should be an announcer. That's what the game is suppose to
be all about. I too share your e***ment in the on-line events. Nothing
beats racing a real person clean on a track where you can be competitive.
Good luck in your future race's.

yet...<g>

Great story.  You're lucky you got some drivers that actually care
about racing instead of wrecking.   Normally, that doesn't happen
until you get to skill levels 1+ or 2+.

I've lost a race or two because I couldn't keep the car low on
the last lap.

Tim.

On Papy servers, it don't even happen at level 6 :(

That Papy Level 6 server is the worst demolition derby on WON.
