You say the problem only recently started. A couple of questions.
When things were ok, did you have the Gravis at the time? We're you
using it? Have you got the joystick port disabled on one of the cards?
I've been using a duel soundcard setup for a long time now (Gravis and
Vibra16) and I can never get the joystick to calibrate properly if I
use the Gus. If I use the Vibra16 it's fine. It's a known fact that
the Gravis sound drivers are bad and cause this problem on many
machines. It's a pity because it sounds so much better than the Vibra.
I use a Thrustmaster ACM gamecard btw.

I think they do. But you can try to clean them out with some elecrical
contact spray. If the inside of the pots can be reached that is.

ICR2/GP2 calibration probs (longish)

by Jason A. Coo » Sat, 17 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I've recently started to have a problem with ICR2 and GP2 when
I'm trying to calibrate or use my T1 and joystick, and I need
some ideas or suggestions.

The problem is that when I try to calibrate in ICR2, I seem to
have one main cursor on each axis and then a corresponding
'phantom' cursor to the left.  With the joystick (CH-Flightstick)
that's all.  With the T1 the main one (and the phantom) will
drift around quite a bit from time to time.  This seems to affect
the T1 pedals more the steering wheel.  So in ICR2 with the T1
my driving is completely screwed up with unintended braking
turning etc.  With the joystick I just get a pull to the left
from time to time.  BTW the problem is real bad when I just fire
up ICR2 and improves slightly after about 5 minutes.

In GP2 more or less the same problem, it just looks noisy when
calibrating.  When driving it will be OK for a while, and then
just when I'm flying to a new track record (for me :-) ) the car
start to feel like it's being shot in the front right and it's
off into left wall or gravel trap.  It really stinks.

I've tried both input devices in my soundcards (Gravis Ultrasound
and Sound Galaxy) same results.  If I use the joystick port
calibration routine supplied with the Gravis I don't get the
noise in the flightstick, or the T1 Steering but the T1 pedals
are bonkers. The Gravis has a speed compensating gameport BTW.

When I try the flightstick with other games like DOOM2, Falcon3
there's no problem either.

So thinking that my T1 pots were bad, I first went and bought
some electronic cleaning fluid and applied it to the T1 pedal
pots, but no joy there.

I'm about ready to buy some replacement pots, but that wouldn't
explain why my flightstick seems noisy in the driving sims.  I
seem to recall noticing this first when I switched from ICR1 to
ICR2, and GP2 has never been really smooth since I got it, but
it has gotten intolerable in the last couple of days.

Are these driving sims just a lot more sensitive in calibrating
or what? (and so I need a dedicated game card?)

or

Do my pots need replacing?

thanks for any comments.

Cheers

Is there anything you changed in or on your machine just prior to these
strange happenings?  It sounds like alot of things could be causing
these problems.  Is this "heat" induced flucuations?  Have you tried
moving the card to another slot?

Also before you totally blame the pedal pots, try hooking a joystick to
the T1 plug for the pedals.  If you experience the same problems with
dirty calibrations with the joystick, it's not the pedals' pots.  Could
it be the wiring harness for the T1/pedals?

Just some suggestions to help you trouble-shoot the cause of the
problem.  Sounds like you have already done quite a bit of
trouble-shooting.  Even if the pots are going on the pedals, the
"switch" cleaner should have helped some...
