N4 multiplayer - improved over demo?

by Jeff Vince » Fri, 09 Feb 2001 13:43:47

I saw N4 in the EB today but decided to pass it up and not be the
first on my block.  I'm a GPL'er and I found the similar online engine
didn't work very well in the N4 demo -- hyperactive collision
detection and general warping was a bigger problem with more cars in
closer quarters.  So my question is -- does N4 have improved
multiplayer over the demo?  Have those problems been worked out?
Thanks for your comments.

As in anything you race on the internet, the internet is usually the weak
link and the software companies have to work around it. The online play will
depend on the server you can connect to. It is greatly improved over the
demo and it comes with a money back guarantee.

Multiplayer is much improved...as a matter of fact they may have gone the
other way just a tad too much.

The Multiplayer in the release version of N4 is, in a word, FANTASTIC!

It shows just how much of a "Technology Demo" the Demo really was.

I ran in a 40 car Daytona last night and while there was a jitter or two, I
didn't see a single warp.

Of course, YMMV.

Really.  It's that good...

Jeff,

The collision detection is much better in the release than in the demo.
The hypersensitive collisions are no longer there and you can bump a
little without cars flying everywhere.  I have had much more success bump
drafting with the release online than with the demo.  With that in mind,
you're still not going to get away with bumper-car racing like an arcade
game might allow, so hold yer lines and race hard.
