Having trouble racing multiplayer in N4

by Doug Justic » Fri, 09 Feb 2001 09:56:47

When I try to join a race I get the message: Timed out opening
communications channel.

I have a cable modem. I can see the races on display and can communicate
with folks in the chat room. I just can't race. Any ideas. I am kind of a
newbie, so I might be missing something simple - I just don't know what it
is.

Thank,

Doug

Same problems here.  Mindspring ISP using a Linksys network card
connected to a Zyxel 641 ADSL router.  Same time outs.  Never had a
problem before in the 2 years of multiplayer *** with many
different titles. I'm even using 'alternate lookup method'.

There is an issue when multiple TCP/IP devices are detected on a system,
which can cause the game to attempt to connect to sierra.com races using the
first TCP/IP device found instead of the one previously chosen in the
'Connect Via' drop-down.  This issue will be addressed in an upcoming patch.

The only real workaround until that time would be to try to get the proper
TCP/IP device to the top of the Connect Via list.  You might try disabling
or uninstalling any unused or unnecessary TCP/IP devices, or if you need
multiple TCP/IP devices, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling them in
a different order in Windows network control panel.
