Congrats :0)

There are only four places on the Ring where you *need* to stay on the track
(they're listed in track.ini as checkpoints) and I believe they're marked by
the round signs (blue with red ring and red cross). If you're off track in
these areas then you can get the XXX on your pitboard. You won't know you've
been disqualified until you see the pitboard or Escape back to the menu.

Other than those places you can do what you like but I think the generally
accepted way of doing things is to keep at least 2 wheels on the tarmac at
all times. In practice, this only really applies to the world record
challengers to make sure they're all driving the "same" track so I wouldn't
worry about it too much, just do what you have to do to shave those seconds
off!

It's hard to hold back sometimes but I found that driving conservatively to
avoid crashing and the use of shift-r saved me far more time than I would
make up by going like a bat out of hell. I tend to try 1 or 2 really fast
laps first to get it out of my system, and then slow it down a bit and try
to make it round in one piece :0)

Crashes cost you twice really, because you waste time spinning around and
getting stuck in the hedge, and then waste even more time because you're
forced to start off on cold tyres and with a heavy fuel tank, which makes
life tougher than ever.

Good luck!

Was Curious Leo.. Thanx..
I run all chassis but my 3 "favs" are Eagle, Lotus and Honda. The others
take some time to get use to after running my preferred' chassis but I do
enjoy them all.... <g> Cheers Thom_j.

hi,

for some wierd reason, Leo's post appeared in my newsreader *after*
yours.  it all makes a bit more sense now.

improved my ring time by 15 seconds last night.  but the lap had xxx
as a time, so i guess i hit the grass too much or something.

regards,
ian
(pssst, anybody got a second hand .sig I can buy, real cheap?)

>> did my best lap so far at the ring.
>> improved by 15 seconds to 9:36.  still using the joypad :)

>Congrats :0)

still have to do it again, officially :)

i will keep my eyes peeled for them.  darn.  i don't even get time to
read the signs unless I've crashed next to them.

hell.  if I could stay on the track perfectly, I would.  the
grasshopping is a result of me getting it wrong most of the time :)

i have this hoodoo that follows me.  I'll be about half way around the
lap with no major F-ups, except, maybe driving up a wall and down
again (!) and I start thinking, "this is the lap", "i'm on a groove"
or whatever.  it invariably results in me spinning or something.  then
i make 2 more mistakes or so and then end of story.

boy.  do I know the feeling...
thanks.  i'm finally taking the last bridge at high speed without
planting it in the hedge on the right afterwards so I guess I am
getting better.  i pretty much know what corner is next now so I'm
rarely caught out.  just need to practise the middle bits a lot more
now.

another thing.  i did most of my practising using the cooper.  i can't
believe how much faster i am in the lotus.  i thought as a beginner,
it wouldn't make a huge difference, but wow.  guess the acceleration
of the lotus must be vastly superior.

regards,
ian

A couple of times I've had a shift-r lap be faster than a clean lap.  I guess
I'm so pissed at the off that I get the red mist for the rest of the lap.  Then
next lap I take it easy...and I'm slower. :(

If that's the case you have a serious amount of work to do to get a Monster

Putting one side off will not do it, but there are four places where cutting
completely across will negate your lap.  There are no signs coinciding with
these locations, though many will tell you that there are.

checkpoint_0 = 2037.0  -14.0   7.5  5.0 0       ; prevents cutting Nordkehre II

checkpoint_1 = 2763.3  -14.7   7.0  5.0 0       ; prevents cutting Hatzenbach
II
checkpoint_2 = 3138.0  -14.3   6.5  5.0 0       ; prevents cutting Hocheichen
checkpoint_3 = 7069.5   -9.0  11.0 10.0 0       ; prevents cutting Adenauer
Forst

They all have penalty times listed, but maybe that's only for the race, in
practice you lose the lap?

PB 8:15 here
Normal laptimes are between 8:30 and 8:45, one spin included.

it seems so.  time is scored as XX:XX.

Very frustrating.

Wow, I never noticed that monster rank thing.  Let's see ... it took 2+ years
to find the time to get a -ve rank with *one* chassis, so I'm confident I
can have a -ve monster rank in say about 10 - 15 years! ;-)
