If you practice enough, so that you learn all the corners by memory, a
8:30 really isn't that hard, you don't have to push the car to do a
8:30 lap. 'average' times vary mostly between 8:00 and 8:30 online,
with the occasional exceptions.

Damn there goes my social life if i'm going to get my laptimes down...
on the plus side I did a 1:30.2(pb.) on monza last night in the lotus, but
on the next lap a funny noise developed in the engine.....(strange I thought
the lotus was bomb proof ....NOT)

Just go to GPLRank(url below) then click on *Multiple Choice Hell*,
and for for track select Nurburgring, you'll get a list of 2,170(F1)
lap times.

Says *you*<g>.  While I couldn't run a lap in my head(a la Graeme Nash), I do
know which way the next corners go.  My PB(meaning pushing by definition) is
only 8:38.  I can't *imagine* doing an 8:15 on average...

My PB is a shade over 8:20, but in the car I'm happiest with (Ferrari)
I tend to get nervous below about 8:45. Actually, I'm nervous *above*
8:45 as well...

As I said, with the occasional exceptions <G>
:)
Eldred, please mail me a replay of you driving at the Ring, I'd like
to examine it in RA, you must be losing major time somewhere..
Considering the times you're driving at the other tracks, I can't
image you can't drive faster than 8:38 on the Ring..

I completely agree with this - if I make it round without crashing (!) I'm
almost always around 8:35 to 8:45. I have to be really on form to lap in
less than that, and I crash much much more often if I'm pushing hard.

I found GPL SpyGirl really useful to compare my laps with the Papy replay of
8:21.xx - I usually find I can stay reasonably close for about half a lap
and then a silly mistake on my part leaves me watching the other car
disappearing over the horizon.....

I /can/ run a lap in my head (last time there were just two corners I wasn't
quite sure about, the right/left sweepers around Metzgesfeld) and my PB
(from the days when I had time to play regularly) is 8:40.  The last few
goes
have been around 9:20, though that's more lack of practice with GPL at all.

Just returned to the ng - good to see GPL still makes up about half the
traffic!

How long did it take people to get under 8 21 at the 'ring ?

Eldred et al ,

I've just cracked it ( just , 8.16 ) by simply trying harder , gaining a
little in each bend , learning the track more thoroughly with every lap I
spend there - no magic formula. BUT ..... there IS an awful lot of time out
there if you think about it Eldred , a tenth in every bend would take at
least 15 seconds off ! so if you can find a tenth in just some of them ...
don't get disheartened when you crash - the important thing is that you're
learning all the time.

Tip 1 - if you can find a little exit speed out of Bergwerk ?
Onto main straights ?
There has to be a second down those at least if you can find a mile-an-hour
on each.
Tip 2 - throttle though the bottom of the Foxhole , a few nerves perhaps
....
Tip 3 - there's loads of time round Wipperman / the Brunchen / Flantzgarten
just 'cos it's so hard you're seldom at 10/10ths.
Tip 4 - try 2nd gear where you've been in 1st especially round the above.
Tip5 - keep breathing.

All the best , John

PS. I can't get a 1.27 at Monza to save my life ! or a 1.20 at Kyalami.
I just can't see where the time might be , so you have my sympathy.

Hehe...
http://www.umich.edu/~epickett/eplaps.htm
I'm in the process of re-doing it, but my Ring lap is there...
I need to learn more about tables, etc. so I can set it up nicer.

Even knowing the track THAT well doesn't help much?  Great...

Well, good and bad.  We keep getting reports of people discovering the game,
and within a month or two, they've gone -ve in GPLRank... <g>

Yes, logically I know that(a tenth every corner).  Reallistically, I can't even
find THAT.  I'm just wondering how many more laps it'll take.

LOL!  Yeah, breathing IS a secondary concern in some places at the Ring...<g>
I don't know the names of the turns enough to know which areas you're talking
about.  I'd have to look at a track map.  Bergwerk is the 'hedges' section,
right?  I'll check your suggestions with the map when I get home.

Well, you're about 2 seconds faster on both tracks...  Right now, I'd settle
for THOSE two seconds<g>.
