Hi,

I've been using GPL and the MSFF Sidewinder wheel for a while now with
Win98SE and it's been fine, but I've just installed WinMe and now the gear
change paddles have stopped responding in the game.  In the Control Panel
calibration program they work fine but for some reason GPL cannot see them.
All the other buttons on the front of the wheel work fine.  Has anyone else
had a similar problem and does anyone know a fix?

Many thanks.

Dont have ME, but often I find I need to have the sidewinder profiler in the
taskbar for things to work right.

You should have read some reviews about Windows ME. No way in the world
would I put that trash (ME) on my system.......My suggestion......backup
important info and files........reformat.....and start fresh with
98SE............if you don't, you'll think about this reply many times!

ME=Problems for  *some*  gamers - not all!  Runs fine on my system, but
gives other guys fits.  Too many possible combinations of hardware and
software configurations to make blanket statements.

Me again - First of all its a Via Apollo KT133 chipset so Via and Apollo are
one and the same - my mistake.
Here's a post I found from a look on deja.com

Here's the solution: format your c: drive, and install windows 98 se without

> your SB live player in it. Now shut down your computer and insert the
> soundcard. Turn on your system. When Windows displays the messages 'new
> hardware found .....' just ignore them every time and click cancel. Now,
> when your computer's finished starting up, you have to install the
specific
> w98 drivers, wich you can find on www.hitsquad.com/smm under Sound
> cards/device drivers. The file should be something like SB9x1199.zip. Not
> the Live Ware shit! Unzip and the drivers will be installed. It's the only
> solution I've found, and everything works fine now, while I have an AMD
> Athlon and Via Chipset plus onboard soundcard. So SB live DOES work on Via
> Chipset!!!

And another solution here:
Have you tried  PCI Latency patch for VIA Chipsets by George E. Breese ?
This was the only thing that fixed my problem. I cannot find the link now
but I downloaded the zip file with an html that explains what it is about.
Let me know if you are interested, I can e-mail it to you if you don't find
the link (there is a patch for nt/win2k and another one for win9x/me). Now I
don't have any look-up anymore but on occasions, under significant hdd
activity I have the well-known creative live noises (TM). I installed VIA
4.31 driver but the look-ups remained until applied this patch. I hope this
will work for you either.

Ovi

Here is an excerpt from the documentation that came with the patch:

Version 0.14 4/20/01
What is it?
This is a driver for Windows 9X, NT, and 200X. It is intended to stabilize
the PCI bus of computers that have certain Via chipsets.

Do I need it?
If your computer has any of the following symptoms:

Files copied from one IDE hard disk drive to another are corrupted
The computer stops ("freezes", "hangs", "locks up") when playing sounds,
especially to a Creative SoundBlaster LIVE! card
The computer stops ("freezes", "hangs", "locks up"), or files are corrupted,
when copying to or from an IDE DVD, CDROM, or CDRW drive
Sounds from a SoundBlaster LIVE! card are distorted when other PCI settings
are adjusted in the computer
AND, if your computer has a VT82C686B chip on its motherboard, along with
one of the following chips:

Apollo Pro, Pro Plus, Pro133, Pro133A; labeled "VT82C691" or "VT82C693" or
"VT82C693A" or "VT82C694X"
KX133, labeled "VT8371"
KT133, labeled "VT8363"
KT133A, labeled "VT8363A"
Pro266, labeled "VT8633"
KT266, labeled "VT8366"
then you might need this driver.

VIA has acknowledged a problem with their VT82C686B controller chip. The
VT82C686B is a chip that is responsible for, among other things, controlling
the IDE bus. When overloaded by an incorrectly-configured motherboard, the
chip can cause corruption and/or lockups. The SoundBlaster LIVE! card seems
to make the problem worse.

Wouldn't you guys rather try and help him with his problem that blame it all
on Win ME ?

I'm by far a fan of any MS OS products, but I had same MSFF wheel problem
happen to me (yes it was on Win ME, but again later when I installed older
Win98 SE- same problem). Gear change paddles work everywhere, but GPL.. they
work in control panel, other games etc.

I asked around in Vroc at the time it happened and got a quick response...
Use MS Wheel profiler and create custom profile. There, assign numeric +
and - to gear changing paddles. Repeat at GPL calibration screen ... e.g.
press the paddle for gear up- and it will be marked +. And for gear down
press other, now -.  Try it out...

hope it helps

Mike

Some folks run it just fine.  I had nothing but problems with it though
& reinstalled Win98SE.  Did the same for the kids computer & they were
much happier without ME.  YMMV.
