200MMX and N2... Good performance?

by David O. Cors » Mon, 10 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I own a Dell 200MMX Pent. with 32 Ram, 512k cache, and a Matrox Millenium 4
Meg video card with of course Windows 95. How will Nascar 2 run on this...
lately I have only bought games for my 3dfx card (which all have great frame
rate) but I have heard so much about this I intend to get it even though it
doesn't support my card.

What framerate can I expect if I go full graphics on my Millenium? What if I
want 25-30 fps, how much will I have to turn off?

Thanks!

I can run Nascar 2 on my Dell 233 mmx with all graphics on, and be
consistantly in the 27-30 range in non rendition, and pretty much 30 in
rendition. You should be fine even with your Matrox card, however if your
like most and get hooked on N2, seriously consider getting yourself a
rendition card, even one of the original chip cards, the v1000, will make a
big difference in how the graphics look to you.

You probablly could turn everything on. I can turn almost everything on on my
P120. My friend has a 200MMX and it ran GP2 full graphics 640x480 res. with no
mirrors and it was very smooth.

200MMX and N2... Good performance?

I'd turn off clouds (or sky, whatever it was).  I have a 200 MMX and had a
Mystique 4Mb and was getting over 25 fps. Iset the asphalt texture to drop out
below 25 fps and it did drop out occasionally, around the grandstands with
other cars about.  You could reduce the number of cars drawn ahead or behind. I
think I was using the default settings for the opponent cars drawn.

Since I play alot of N2 and ICR2 i went and got a rendition card. They are
pretty cheap at the moment. The difference for me is not just frame rate, since
I think the game tops out at 30 fps anyway, but the graphics are much nicer
with a lovely, hazy distance effect.  Icr2 rendition is 10 times as good to
look at as the normal version, with skies, full detail mirrors, realistic
textures and 30 fps 98% of the time.  It will go faster than 30 fps but
time speeds up time when doing that (didn't einstein say that would happen?)
which is why I think the game tops out at 30 fps.  It's a shame because the
game a bit smooth at 70 fps but the car is undriveable!

Anyway, sorry to digress. Remember to turn off the clouds, you don't need 'em.
