Psyg F1 vs Power F1

by VABergfe » Thu, 14 Aug 1997 04:00:00

While I prefer a "sim" feel to driving, I do not care for all the setup
options of a GP2 -- plus I'm a bit of a graphics***<g>.  I am about to
buy a 3dfx card, so I could run Psyg F1 or Power F1 from Eidos (no 3d
support).  What comparison can anybody make for me between these two?
Thanks.

Can't compare as I haven't played Psygnosis F1. But I can tell you
Power F1's SVGA sucks even on a P188MMX. It's slow, jerky and
unresponsive, and IMO GP2 is better looking with full detail SVGA
(leaving sky detail off to get smooth playing, even in Monaco).

Wow.  That's kind of surprising.  I'll either go with Psyg F1 or give GP2
another look.  Thanks.

Well... If you want to use your 3Dfx card, Formula 1 is the only
choice.  All in all, it's graphically very good, models the tracks
well and drives somewhat like a real car.  The AI drivers are horrible
and will ram you continually.  This makes driving with damage enabled
impossible.  I would avoid Power F1.  Even with the "joystick" patch,
it's virtually impossible to drive.  It produces about a 2" deadzone
on my Thrustmaster T2 that's virtually impossible to get used to.  It
has slightly better graphics performance than GP2 and pretty good
course design, but the control issue completely ruins the game.

P.S.  Regarding Psygnosis F1: The original UK release of the 3Dfx
binary apparently has performance problems.  There is a patch on the
3Dfx web page.  This binary appears to be the same one that I got on
my US-purchased CD.  Also, you need to select analog joystick every
time you start the game.  It also has a very interesting bonus track
that becomes available after you win the championship.  Unfortunately,
the fact that you've won the championship is not saved to disk, so you
need to at least load a saved game and run the last race of the season
to enable the bonus track.  Aside from the negatives listed here, I
find it to be very enjoyable.  Much better than I expected from
reading this news group.  Try the demo and see what you think.
