Psyg F1 - Pedals & Exit Problems & Rants

by Kulvinder Singh Matha » Fri, 23 May 1997 04:00:00

I have installed the 3Dfx version of F1 and have been playing it
for a few days now. Bur....

I have the CH Virtual Pilot Pro steering wheel and CH Pro Pedals.
These are correctly set in Win95 and also work great in GP2, ICR2
and NASCAR 2.

So why don't the pedals register in F1 ? It's crazy at the moment
because I'm having to accelerate and brake by pushing the wheel
in and out. Doesn't F1 support the pedals? Is it a bug? Is there
a fix? Do I need to get new control hardware? Could any of you
out there please help this unfortunate soul?

Also, when I exit the game I'm left with a black screen and I
can't see a thing. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? My
hardware set-up is --

        P166 with 96Mbyte EDO.
        SoundBlaster AWE 32
        Orchid Righteous 3Dfx card
2Mb Matrox Millennium upgraded to 4Mb

Norton Anti-Virus with Auto Protect enabled
        Glide 2.3

One other "bug" is that F1 blasts sound out at maximum...it
nearly blew my hi-fi speakers!! I can set the sound to a lower
value from within the game but it doesn't seem to work with the
music. The settings are not saved either.

Talking about the settings, the game doesn't remember any of my
settings from the previous time that I loaded it (eg for sound,
controller, car set-up, race set-up, etc). Is this normal? If it
isn't then what's the problem for this? Does it have anything to
do with the black screen that I get when I exit the game? Help!!
It's very frustrating having to do the settings every time I
start the game.

Other rants (not bugs but bad design features as far as I see it)
are --

High pitched screeching engine sound. I don't care if it has been
DAT recorded from an F1 car...it so ***y annoying!!!! GP2 is
far superior in this regard.

The so called "cockpit view". I knew that it wouldn't be a true
***pit view but it would have been nice to have had mirrors so
that I can look at the front and the rear at the same time and at
least try to block any overtaking manoeuvres. The alternate views
from "above and behind2 and the rear view are no real
compensation....although the "above and behind" view did help me
to control the car better at Monaco.

And the AI...well it isn't. ICR2 and GP2 handled this better. OK,
OK, I know F1 is an arcade game but the gameplay would have been
so much better....

Didn't the beta testers for F1 suggest appropriate improvements?
I do admit that I haven't played the Playstation version so
perhaps maybe the game has been improved from what it was.

Anything positive about the game....yes...it does look very ***.
I'm trying out some of the other tracks and comparing them to
GP2. I'm sure that I do like this game but I had wished for so
much more....

I'm now waiting for GP3 with 3D support and the new F1 game from
Lankhor with 3D support. They had better be good and I hope that
the people from the appropriate companies take note of what PC
gamers really want and get away from the traditional market that
they concentrated on in the console areas.
