GP4 perfomance - slow cpu fastest video card...

by Smit » Thu, 20 Nov 2003 18:48:05

I have an older Pentium700 with plenty of ram and
and older sound blaster and wheel and pedals

So, in order to play GP4 i got a spanking new GeForce
FX5600, but performance still sucks - about
10fps with *everything* turned off and lowest resolution.

The board supports agp x 2

Does anyone have any suggestions ? Or is a P700
a total write off for this game ...

I'm using pIII 1.4 with radeon 9700 pro.... runs like a dream (after editing
the graphics config file). I had a pIII 800 before that, it struggled a lot
more, though did a lot better than yours.

Have you made sure that all background programs are not running?  You don't
want anything but maybe your firewall running in the system tray.  exit out
of realplayer, printer/scanner software, aim,  messenger, etc.....
other things that can use up cpu cycles would be anti virus, backup
programs, monitoring software, etc.....

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe in order to take full advantage of an
amazing graphics card it's necessary to have a CPU to back it up?

Its depends on the game, but in general his video card is sitting
around twiddling its virtual thumbs waiting for the processor to give
it something to do.

Or in the case of an agp 2/p700, the vid card is twiddling thumbs and
knitting and cooking popcorn all whilst waiting for something to do.

Jeez I was going to buy that sim..........But now I see this I may
have to wait till I increase my cpu power. Im still on a 300 with 384
ram & a Voodoo2 card ;-)
Hey I still drive GP2 all the time ;-)

Good plan. GP4 is far more poorly programmed, and requires a very stable
machine to run trouble-free... I certainly don't like having stuff going on
in the background while playing GP4 because it usually cause the game to
hang at some stage. OTOH, I have all sorts of stuff up in F1C...  I have
dual screens, so I run F1C on one, and have Trillian/Outlook on the other
and see if messages come up, etc etc... and it runs faultlessly. Definitely
better programmed.
