Sad state of race sims at local Best Buy

I stopped by , my local Best Buy, this afternoon. Had a little spare time,
and thought I might check out GTR2 if they had it.

Stopped in there, and started looking for it. Not only did they not have
GTR2, but I was suprised to find that they had not one, no, not even one,
racing simulator!

They had two or three flight simulators, to include the just released FSX in
both std and deluxe versions. But I scoured the shelves, and could not come
up with one racing simulator. I even went so far as to ask an employee, he
said yes, they had some, and he didn't know what happened, but he did know,
they had a large clearance of the shelves, sending some titles back that had
not been selling.

I was tempted to pick up the newly released  MS flight sim, FSX, but, am
getting married soon, and my time has been short of late, and I know I would
not have the time to devote to it right now, and I still have FS2004 that is
pretty darn good should I have the urge.

Maybe I just hit this one store at an odd time, but I sure was suprised to
see not one racing title for the pc on their shelves!

The neartest BB had GTLegends, but didn't have GTR2 or any copies on order.
I had to go to the next nearest BB, which had one copy in stock. If a
BB had an order for GTR2, it was for just 4 copies. There are a few BB's
where I live (Southern California), and about 1/2 of them carried GTR2.

I've alread posted about how few PC based games there are for sale these
days in the USA, compared to console games.

Yeah, seems racing sims, and to a lesser extent, PC games should
be on the endangered species list.  FWIW, their website lists GTR2
for $19.99.  Did you ask if they had it in stock?  Sometimes the
merchandise doesn't make it to the shelves.

Probably a reflection of Papy's absense.

    Look at the options atm.

GTR/GTL - buggy and multiplayer limited

rFactor - great, except that you need to spend hours working out how
to -

a/ find the tracks you want and then hope they're done right
    b/ find the cars you want     "       "      "       "         "       "

Little wonder consoles are doing so well in this genre - at least you
know it will be a case of plug and play instead of hours of stuffing about.

For me, reading the race sim forums, downloading the tracks, cars and
mods, and tweaking the settings to get everything "just right" is half
the fun!  Don't get me wrong - racing is still the best part!  But if I
could just plug and play (like with consoles), with little opportunity
to tweak and expand the sim, I would get bored very quickly.  I guess
that's why rFactor is my favorite sim.  Admittedly, I spend as much
time tweaking and expanding rFactor as I do racing with it -- But that
just adds to the enjoyment!

Agreed. While I am in the middle of a Madden 07 kick right now, I still
look forward to the new releases of tracks, cars, updates, etc. that
are offered for the PC. Being locked into a specific set of tracks
and/or cars (as in the console market) isn't for me. This is where
rFactor excels as a sim, customization.

I understand the attraction of consoles. KNOWING that as soon as you
pop in the game it will work, but there is still no guarantee that the
content is any more accurate than what it released daily for the PC.
I'll take the minor aggravation of an occasional tweak or edit in order
to get new stuff regularly.

As for the Big Box type stores, I gave up long ago trying to look for
racing sims there. Best Buy was the worst. They would check the titles
into stock, thus showing them as available online for in store pickup.
But once arriving there, there were none out. I even did the "order
online for in store pickup" option once. (For GTLegends). I go to the
CS counter and they tell me that it's not in stock yet. I show them the
order form and confirmation (which tells me that the order was
processed and picked by an employee) and they still don't believe me.
So I go to one of the PC's setup in the store, search for the product
and then ask a CSR to show me where the title is. Amazingly, they
actually had to LOOK for the game.

I just go to GoGamer.com and order from them. Honest "in stock"
postings, super fast shipping and prices that are a tick below the
local retail, offsetting a portion of the shipping and almost making it
a wash in some cases.

Mine had 8, but it took them 2 days to find them.

If PC games ever die, the entire grapics card market will implode upon
itself.

Yep - I hear you. I have been around in simming circles for over 10
years now and I know where you're coming from. But believe me, the novelty
of all the stuffing about (even though it can have real life parallels)
wears off after a while. I have not had the wheel hooked up to the computer
for close to 12 months now, but even as an Aussie I can't be bothered
stuffing about getting the new V8 mod running, then finding tracks and then
maybe finding a league. It's exhausting just thinking about it.

Then again, maybe I'm just getting old! :)
