I have a ViewSonic G790 and wouldn't consider going back to my old 15"
monitor. I don't know if the price is under $600, though.

Iiyama Vision Master Pro 450 is very nice. Dunno about the cost in $US
though, as I'm in the UK.
I think it's about 450 over here, could be wrong though...

I have to agree.  BOTH the Hitachi 17 and 19 are almost holographic...
and I sell 2-3 hundred monitors per month.  They are now selling
UNBRANDED, OEM Boxed...if you want a DEAL...this is a STEAL...but
INSIST on firing up and checking edge to edge...brightness,
convergence, focus...and warranty.  They are NOT "dumping"...but
have about the tightest spec tolerances I have seen from a mass market
distributor.  I'm gonna buy one myself...fwiw.  cheers...d,

Very possibly. Granularity and/or patterns, such as you described, can often
be eliminated by adjusting the horizontal and vertical moir settings. I
experienced just what you described with my 19" Hitachi 751 until I adjusted
the moir settings.

The G790 is a great monitor. It's  the one I have and I'm quite happy
with it. Maybe, the screen was set to a lower resolution. Also, if a bad
video card was installed, that could effect the quality. I run 1024X768
16 bit colors, and screen is crystal clear. I compare this monitor to
the one I had before on my old Pc (put the 2 pc side by side) and I
could not believe how I manage to work/play on my old monitor!
