OT: need advice on monitor: 17" or 19"?

by ra300 » Wed, 31 Jan 2001 08:58:04

I am looking at either a Sony 17" Trinitron monitor.  Or an NEC 19"
flat screen (i am pretty sure it's also a trinitron).

In terms of sims, which one would I enjoy better?  I am thinking of
going with the Sony since I figure the graphics on a 19" would require
some pretty heavy horsepower to run.

My current system is a Celeron 466 + 128 MB + Voodoo 3 2000.

I play GPL occasionally.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 753DF flat screen, and regardless of which
size you go with, I would HIGHLY recommend a flat screen monitor (I
actually choose a 17" flat screen over a 19" conventional monitor when
I got the Samsung monitor).

I always thought the flat screen monitor deal was just a way to make
more money off of us consumers, but after doing extensive side-by-side
testing, I decided that the flat screen DOES look better.  I actually
get more of a 3D effect in games, it seems, and MUCH less glare, which
helps a LOT.

Hope this helps a bit.

Go ahead and get the 21" I just sent my 19" Trintron back I got with my new
Dell and exchanged it for the 21" Trintron it is awesome. It was only
$300.00 bucks more and it was worth it.

The size of the monitor does not effect performance - its the
resolution you run at.

Get the best of both worlds - a 19" flatscreen Sony Trinitron.  I have
always been partial to the Triniton in my business purchases and for
home use.  I use the Sony E400 19" flatsceen at home and while it is
not the best Sony makes its still very good.

The size of the monitor is of no consequence to the 'horsepower'
required to display an image. If price is no object between the
two, I would pick up the 19". Any chance of running them side by
side? Best comparison you can make is with your own eyes.

Cheers,
Rod.

spoke:

I have an NEC FE950 flat screen (19") and it uses a Misubishi
Diamondtron tube (same technology as Trinitron). Bigger is always
better and does not require more horsepower. I'm happy with the NEC
monitor.

Yea, I feel the same way about flat screen monitors. I was going to
buy a KDS 19" *near* flat screen montitor, but when I saw the NEC
*true* flat screen in the same store my mind was made up and I plonked
down the extra bucks for the NEC monitor.

Don't the larger monitor sizes require higher resolutions to look the same
as smaller screens with lower resolutions?

Of course. Everything gets bigger and so do the pixels.

GPL in 640*480 would look like ***on a 21" monitor while it looks great on
a 14"

Sorry I wasn't clear enough.  To get the same amount of
"un-blockiness", I'd have to run a higher resolution on a 19".  That
is where my computer would need the power.

Instead of the Sony try for a KDS 17 flat (can't remember # right
now) they have the sony screen and cost less (running around 260-280
at www.mwave,com)

Ah, I see.

I look at different monitors all day and I seem to be less
discerning than most it would appear, I wouldn't expect the
blockiness to be considerably more noticeable on the 19".

You could always sit a little farther away from the 19" ;)

Cheers,
Rod.

I went with an NEC FE950 a couple months ago and have been happy
with it.  Consider, you'll probably be looking at that monitor for the
next 3-5 years, so you'll appreciate the extra size at some point
(unless cost is crucial).
