GPL Problems

by Jason Crook » Fri, 11 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I am having some some major problems with Grand Prix Legends... While
racing (in training mode, single race, or World Championship) the screen
will lock up, while the sound effects continue. The only way I am able to
exit is to manually shut down the program (CTR-ALT-DEL). This usually
happens before 1 lap can be completed. I have been able to stop this from
happening by disabling the 3d acceleration, but
the game is then un-playable. I sent an e-mail to Sierra tech support, and
they suggested the problem might be with DirectX 6. They suggested I install
DirectX 5 instead... The problem is this. How do I get rid of my previous
version of DirectX?? If I try to install DX5, it tells me the installation
was completed successfully, but there is no change in the version. I'd
appreciate any advice someone might have on the subject....

    BTW, I'm using a Monster 3D II 12 meg, with a Pentium II 266 with 64
megs of RAM, and running Windows 98.

I tried turning off all of the advanced options in the Monster
properties, removed all of the Windows programs running in the background,
and fooled around with all the graphics options in the game. The last thing
I have left to try is the DirectX thing... Anyone have any other suggestions
as to what might be causing this problem?? I'm dying to play this game...
The half-lap teasers are driving me nuts!

Thanks for any help....

It really sounds as if your Voodoo2 card is overheating or is
overclocked.  If you don't have the properties to change this on the
card's property tab, you can download one at the www.3dfx.com site.  I
would suggest turning down the clock of the card and see if this helps
at all.

Uninstall the Direct6 (http://home.att.net/~ebrink1/Direct.htm) , I had the
same problem and solved it by installing Direct6.1 , but you can`t download
it now.Direct5 works fine.

I installed DirectX 5, installed the old Monster 3D II drivers, and
tried installing the 3DFx reference drivers... But the problem is still
there. Someone suggested that the card might be over-heating, causing it to
lock up. I sprayed the card with some circuit chiller which kept it cool,
but didn't solve the problem. I'm completely out of ideas at this point...
I've read many post saying that GPL is too frustrating to play. It seems
to me that the ultimate frustration is NOT being able to play it!!

Thanks....
