GPL problem again

by Matthias Fla » Sat, 26 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Okay, this is probably a FAQ - but certainly a SUCK:

The GPL Demo (Watkins Glen) worked on my system (Win92b, Riva128,
64MB, DirectX5, Multi System Wheel, AMD K5-PR166, later a K6-233) for
several weeks, with only a few fps in software mode of course, but
that's not the problem: I would by a Voodoo for GPL asap.

After my hard disk crashed and got repaired, I reinstalled everything
- except the GPL Demos, which are always crashing in the calibration
screen: Doesn't matter whether the wheel is installed or not, the game
goes to the screen (and even accepts wheel inputs). But at the same
time, the clock in the system tray flashes through the green box in
the corner, and when I click ok, I'm back at the desktop. GPL has to
be killed with the task manager.
I tried everything, of course also following exactly the FAQ of d.b.
and some hints I read here, but nothing helped.

Today, I installed the beta and played it a few hours. ;-)
But the first time I wanted to restart it, it waited at the start
screen for input, flashing the clock - and GPL disappeared again at
the first mouse click. No way to get it going again.

I'm really pissed off that it used to work for weeks, and today for
hours, but then causes stupid problems.
Under these circumstances, even buying the final version of GPL makes
no sense to me - it would probably not run at all, or only once on my
system.

Something similar to this happened on one of the full (beta) versions.
It would only happen if the desktop resolution was at 640x480 in 16
bit color mode. If you are using that display mode, change to 800x600
and see if it helps.

Same problems here.  Except now I can't run it at all, no matter how many
times I reinstall.  I have no idea why!  I have posted to this group
several times and no one has been able to offer any advice that would
help.

I have a STB Velocity 128, Monster1, SB AWE 64 Value, P166. 128mb Ram, T1,
ACM Game Card. I run in 1024x768x16bit color.

You don't tell which version of Windows you are using. The demo does not run
under Win98. However DoktorB has a fix at
http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl/ if you are running Win98. (Or you
could just wait for the final release)

I had the problem in both WIn95 and Win98.  I used the fix to put the game
in a state where it SHOULD have run.  It just didn't.

As far as waiting for the full version, believe me, I am.  I am very
afraid however that it won't work.  That would...um...suck.

Just in case you forgot. Have you re-installed the Directx and
Glide drivers for the 3DFX.

Yes, this might have been a reason, I used a better monitor earlier,
now I have to use 640x480x64k on a old 14".
Just after posting the first message, it got it running. Getting angry
and yelling at it seems to help.;-)
I removed the settings in Win95 joystick setup, but left the wheel
connected. Maybe GPL got confused because I had only 2 axis/2 buttons
"user defined installed", while the Mults Systems MS200E has 4 axis
(even 5) overall, but 2 of them are flight sim throttle/rudders and
the like, not useful for driving.
I will rewire it later to separate brake and gas, if possible.

But now, I can not play other games as there is no wheel installed in
Win95/DirectInput.
Also, Win95 does not shut down properly anymore. :-(

But then, you'll be entitled to full Sierra/Papyrus support, for what
it's worth.
