GPL - Problems running both demos.

by Rimme » Tue, 29 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

After reading various reviews, I was really interested in trying out GPL. A
couple of months ago a demo became available, I downloaded and tried to run
it. My machine is a P400, voodoo 2, 128mb ram, direct x 5 etc. As soon as
the I get to the first screen it crashes back to Windows with an error is
GPL.EXE or sometimes Kernel32. I thought the problem was perhaps it was an
early demo. This weekend a new demo became available. I installed this from
CD ( 3 news cars and Monza). Same problem. Every other game I have got works
fine !!

Any guesses. Please help. Reply via email,

Mat

Same problem here.  I am worried about the final release but it won't stop
me from buying it to find out.  I was going to hunt for the warez version
just to see if it would run on my system but I thought, what the heck, I am
getting a new computer in the next couple of months anyhow so I will wait
for final release.   There was no guarantee that the warez version would
work in its current form and it really seems like no one knows where i came
from and when it was built.

To be honest, I am not sure what version of the demo I have tried.  I tried
a version from the UK site and the version on the PCGamer disk.  Both ***
out on my current system.  I am running 98 and do all of the stuff I thought
you had to do but it won't get me to the driving screen.  My machine locks
up real good, sound flipping out. Sometimes I can get to the desktop and my
mouse will hardly move at all.   I had a hunch that it might be  a) an
interrupt problem although 98 doesn't detect one  or b) my ACM gamecard/T1
combo.  I really have no idea.  I tried for about 3 hours to get both demos
to run last week and no dice.

I also have to mention that when I was running 95, I could run the game
ONCE, right after the installation.  It would run perfectly, smoothly etc. I
was able to get to 1:13's at the Glen etc.  The second time I started it up,
the sound was garbled, the car didn't move and I would eventually lock up.
I don't have high hopes for this one, but eventually I will have a system
that will run it.  I hope that the manual is a good one to keep me happy
until my new computer arrives (PII450, 128mb, Monster2 :-) ).  It may be a
relatively long wait.

Cheers,

J.

Windows 98

It wont work on Windows 98, nor will the final release.
You need a patch from Sierra, id mail them and ask for it.

Are you kidding!!!!

I just don't believe they will release a sim not working on Win98.

According to the FAQ, there are problems with Win 98 and Cyrix processors. I
have neither just a good old p400 ii with a voodoo 2. Tonight I will update
my drivers to the latest reference drivers and see if that helps. If it
doesn't, what next ?

If you're running Win98, this might be the problem. There is a FAQ re:
how to make the demo run under Win98 at:

http://webhome.idirect.com/~drbryan/gpl/

You might also check if you're using the correct gpl.exe. The setup
utility extracts and then copies the files and forgets to clean up
after itself.

Other than that, it could be any of a number of problems. Slightly
faulty memory, wrong voodoo drivers, hardware incompatibilities etc.

The demo runs perfectly on my K6 200, 32MB, V1, Win95 system. My usual
desktop resolution is 800x600 - maybe this has some influence too?

Just to clarify one thing, no fiddling about is necessary to make the
release version of GPL compatible with Win98... it runs just fine.

Jeez Paul, you'll be after Mr. Nelson's "Worthless font of
misinformation" title at this rate.

GPL absolutely, 100%, surely works with Windows98 - I've been using
them together for the last several months. No-one need worry on that
score.

Thanks for the reply. I'm running Win95, and last night I updated my Voodoo2
to the latest reference drivers. Unfortunately it didn't make any
difference. I will try and drop the resolution tonight, as this seems to
help some people.

It really annoys me that this game doesn't run on my machine but every other
game does that I have, e.g  F1RS, Actua Tennis, World  Cup 98 etc. Seems
that their compatibilty testing at Sierra wasn't that hot. Oh well, one more
try tonight, then I'll forget about it which is a shame because it looks
from screen shots to be a great game.

regards

Mat
