GPL on a laptop?

by Roger Middleto » Sun, 24 Jun 2001 23:11:18

Does anyone have any experience of running GPL on a laptop?

I'm about to take delivery of a Sony Vaio FX203 (PIII/800, 256MB RAM). The
video card doesn't have its own native memory, but up to 11MB of system RAM
can be allocated to the card (an integrated Intel job, but apparently with
some form of 3D graphics acceleration).

I do realise that the video card situation is far from ideal, but wonder
whether, in combination with a fair amount of system grunt, it might be
sufficient to run GPL to some reasonable standard?

I know the GeForce2Go mobile card would have been the ideal way to go, but
in the end other considerations had to win out.

I've got a monitor and keyboard to plug in when I'm at home, and am
contemplating buying the USB Thrustmaster Force Feedback wheel to replace my
slightly knackered old QuickShot joystick.

Any advice gratefully received.

GPL on a laptop?

Hi Roger,
I too just took my first steps with GPL on a notebook.
Have a ATI 16 MB 3D videocard (have no idea, whether the '3D' has any right to
be stated there) in a P3 850.
Tried first in <none> 3D acceleration. Was quite jerky and limited to 640 x 480.

Then I tried the D3D patch and it works like a charme.
Got my Logi installed too, after installing the Microsoft Gameport thingie
first.

BTW: The Geforce mobile was also available for a lousy $5 surcharge, but I
didn't order (oversaw this) <grrrr>
