Logitech FF wheel doesn't fit desk, help!

by Sunny Cho » Tue, 18 Sep 2001 16:59:58

I just moved and have a new work table with a metal frame underneath
which prevents the Logitech FF wheel from being attached as the two
clamp arms have too short a travel and narrow clearance.

I'm sure some people must have encountered this problem and like to know
how they solved it?

I dismantled the clamps and found a large bolt, however its still to
short and I'm looking for a longer bolt to fit it, to give the clamps
more travel so they go under the table and frame smoothly.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions and workaround to this
problem.

Here's a simple drawing showing the cross section of my table and the
problem I'm facing right now:

I used small pieces of wood glued to the underside of the desk to build it
up to a better thickness.....

Thank you for your response, Edward.

However, my problem is not that the wood is too thin; its the metal
framed under the wood table doesn't allow me to get a good clamp with
the FF wheel.

Only way I see is to indeed lengthen the bolts (perhaps using one of those
"cut to lenght" threaded rods), then pad the bottom of the tabletop so the
clamps can indeed clamp the unit to the table without snagging on the frame.

I had a similar problem with a rib on my desk (bolted in for stability
reasons). As this is quite an old desk and the rib is made of wood I just
lobbed a bit off with a jigsaw for the wheel to pass underneath. <g>

I cut two slots into the desk.

Thanks for responding, everyone!

Don't quite understand your answer, Ice; perhaps my drawing wasn't too
clear, so I'm labelling it.

The metal rib is 2 cm from the front edge.

That's too short for my solution. If the metal frame was a bit deeper, you
could at least***the wheel to the desk (right up to the edge of the
metal frame), and place a thin wooden plank (40 x 40 cm) between the wheel
and the top of the desk. This would compensate for the wheel sticking out
too much, the piece of wood acts as an extension of the desk.  A friend of
mine has it set up like this, he had a similar problem.

Anyway, good luck.
