Will new Logitech fit on my desk?

by David A. Ewin » Mon, 21 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I've been considering upgrading my old T2 wheel and am leaning toward the
Logitech.  Aside from the lack of tension on the peddles (which I understand
can be easily fixed with better springs), it seems like the best wheel out
there.  I am particularly interested in getting a USB based wheel.

My one concern is that it won't fit on my desk.  I have a keyboard tray,
although it is set pretty far down.  Could one of you Logitech owners please
measure the distance from the top of your desk to the bottom of the clamping
mechanism on the wheel (or whatever is the lowest point)?

Thanks in advance,

Dave Ewing

Depends.  Since the Logitech clamps pivot, how low they go depends on the
thickness of your desktop.  At a one-inch desktop thickness, the clamp arms
themselves extend 3.25 inches below the deskTOP, while the finger-wheels you
tighten them with go to 4 inches.  They protrude underneath the front edge of
the desktop about 0.4 inch.  Take a look at the clamp photo in the wheel review
on Force-1.com to get an idea of how they work.  Good choice if it fits.

I have the Force RS (which I'm trying to return), as well as the Logitech
Formula Force.  The RS's clamping system is great, because it only protrudes
about and inch and a half from the desktop, and I could still use the
keyboard shelf.  Since the Logitech has such large clamps, I had to move the
keyboard shelf 8" to the left to accommodate the wheel.  Luckily my desk is
very large.  I am able to keep the wheel permanently mounted, although I
must sit off to one side of the screen
