OT- hardware question

I hope you guys can give me a clue here- you've usually been reliable 8^)

I just installed an AMD K6-2/450 in my old MB (VIA MVP3, 100Mhz FSB) and
have an odd thing going on here. The new CPU is marked 2.4v core, 3.3v I/O.
No prob with the 3.3, but my MB has only 2.2 and 2.8v core settings. Since I
have a big hearsing, plus a CPU fan and 2 case fans, I set it up to use the
2.8 setting, thinking the 2.2 probably wouldn't provide enough voltage.
Everything in Win98 sees it as a 450, but my POST says "AMD K6-2/400 CPU
detected".
I also have had 3 lockups today( hadn't had that many in a month with the
300 that was in there). What should I do?

Try 2.2v
Verify the mobo is configure for 450MHz. (ie check that mult is 4.5)
2.8v may creat to much heat for the cpu to run properly.

If it dont run at 450MHz 2.2v , i would drop the clock speed until it
was stable at 2.2v and leave it like that until u get another mobo
that can do the right job.

2.8v will shorten the life of the cpu dramaticlly.
Unless , u maul it with peltiers and fans , or water jacket.

If the MB is posting K6-2/400 it probably means you need to update your bios
so it will support the K6-2/450.
Hopefully, you have a name brand motherboard with a website that allows you
to download the latest bios updates.

Tim,

I just spent a full day trying to upgrade from a K6-2/350 to a K6-2/450
without any luck. And this included also trying a new ASUS motherboard. The
450 constantly ran hot, over 140F and locked up regularly. Then after a
while, wouldn't even make it through startup. I also had the same problem
with my old motherboard of the 450 being shown as a 400,but it was running
as a 450.  I added a 2nd fan,but that didn't work either. So I just went
back t my 350 and will in all likely hood get a Celeron 466mhz instead.

I got a new MB and case and it solved the problem- the CPU is under the
alarm temp(as a matter of fact the heatsink is cool to the touch) and has
given me no problems. Now if I could say the same for this dang Linksys
NIC........<g>

I just got a Celery 466 3 days ago.  No problems so far.  I am running
with the ABIT ZM6 MB and 128 MB.  Haven't had a problem.  Except
Eudora Light won't install (run) properly.  I doubt that has anything
to do with the CPU.
