I'm looking to upgrade my m/b and processor - P3 450 is getting a bit long
in the tooth now. I've been looking at the AMD Thunderbird 1.2g processor as
it seems to represent the best value for money, but have heard that it can
give rise to compatibility issues with other hardware and drivers. Has
anyone else found this to be the case, and if so should I go for a slower
Intel processor, or is the AMD a safe bet?

System spec:
192meg Ram
Geforce 3D Prophet 2 GTS, (32meg.)
MaxiSound Fortissimo s/card.
Acer 50x CD Rom
SupraMax USB 56k modem
Pinnacle Studio DV (for digital video)

PC is mainly used for *** and internet access, with some rudimentary
digital video editing, and some midi sequencing. Any advice or anecdotes
would be much appreciated - I'd prefer the AMD but don't want to spend a wad
of cash causing problems that could have been avoided.

Thanks in advance,

Rick.

PS - Still don't know what the 'D' stands for in FD! (GPL.)

My AMD 1.333GHz and ASUS A7A266 m/b is working fine in DDR mode under
Win98, SBLive, 2 ethernet cards (3COM, Linksys).  Go for the gusto and
get a 1.2 or higher.  The compatiblity issues you hear are with the VIA
chipset I believe.   I have the ALi chipset, it might be slower (can't
be that much slower ;) but it's working fine.

My AMD 1.1ghz system was running great until I got hit by a
cracker/hacker/trojan.  Now it's all back up but my USB wheel isn't talking
to the computer.  Everything else is AoK.

Have you considered simply upgrading the processor ?  If you already have a
P-!!!, this means you have a fairly new MB at the moment; you may only need
to upgrade the BIOS !

As for FD's , I don't have a clue what the D stands for either.  I love the
class though :)

I went from a P3-700 with an ABIT BE6 to the 1.2 Tbird (266mhz) with the
ABIT KT-7 RAID.

512 PC-133
Herc Phrophet GeForce 2 64mb
SB Live
IBM Deskstar 22gig
LWFF
MS Precision Pro stick
HP Burner
50X cheapo CD-Rom
cheapo Network card for cable modem

I had problems loading stuff like my scanner and printer when I originally
loaded ME on this system. And as for ***, this OS was very unstable. I
ran the newest bios for the board, and all newest drives for the other
stuff. This OS just did some weird stuff. Many CTD and lock-ups... I don't
know why.

Last weekend, did a format and went back to 98SE. Everything loaded right
up, no issues, no crashes. Getting 50FPS plus with N4 and all the candy and
cars.

The AMD / ABIT upgrade was cheap and easy. I highly recommend it.

Hope this helps...

Yes as far as bang for your buck get the AMD.
If your curious about the P4....   Its more expensive, runs alot cooler,
and I've have had no probs so far after the usual bios and driver upgrades.

   P4-1.4ghz
   256m PC-800 ram
   ASUS P4-T MB (w/ P4 PS)
   GF2 Ultra <-Detonator 12.1 drivers
   SBLive
   etc.

I have yet to see this processor run over 107*F. Doing nothing it drops
to 94*F.
    As far as FPS it's even w/ a AMD 1.33 w/ GF2 Ultra in N4. I'm getting a
minimum of 70 (90+max) fps at 1280x960x16. At 1600x1200x16 I'm getting a
minimum of 36fps back of the field w/ 45 cars at Martinsville. All tests
done D3d TnL HAL, 16bit color everything maxxed except reflections and
steering wheel are off.
Contrary to popular belief IMO Intel has made a wise choice going with a
new type of architecture even if the P4 is a P3/P6 crossbreed. AMD is
getting close to it's max FSB speed (many OC'ers have reached it), which
makes me wonder what kind of options AMD has created for its self.. The
Intels on the other hand..........
Good luck. I love the AMD 1.2's, I just had to have the overly priced
underdog, and I love the fact that  it runs so cool with the same results as
the AMD's.

I recommend the p3 processor upgrade (1ghz x 100 or 133 if you have the
divider). You'll get at least another year to let controller set  and bus
issues settle down. By then 3 ghz  processors and Mb's might be out. The g3
will have fine tuned stable drivers and competition.

Since you don't have a SB Live I would say you are good to go. I have run
AMD for a few years now, and I'm very happy with them. I still can't belive
the price differance between the Intel and AMD chips.  I'm not sure about ME
but Win98 is old enough now that no matter what brand you go with you will
need to get new motherboard drivers.

What's *average* for a high-end processor?  I don't recall ever seeing any
stats on it.
