I recently splashed out on a new motherboard/ram setup to compliment the
cpu I bought in a moment of weakness a few weeks ago. It's been a good
upgrade in some ways, but in others it showed how much life you can wring
out of "older" technology.

Of course when Half Life 2, Doom3, or Lo-Mac come out it'll mean I'm only
a 9700pro away from a halfway decent PC! And that extra cache on the
Bartons might be handy, and... er... <slap>.

Hopefully my experience and credit card bill will be of use to someone.

PS Oh, I suppose these might be some use...

Google formatting doesn't do tabs very well, so the carefully tabulated
results aren't too easy to read, but it's preferable to spamming several
groups with my waffle.

That 1700+ (1.4ghz) can do 2.4ghz (3500+) with modest cooling and decent
ram.  With an oc'd 9700pro you'll be beating a 3ghz P4 + 9800pro in most
game-related benchmarks.

The fastest I've managed to boot to (and believe me I've tried! :o) is
11.5x200, 2300MHz but it's only a few % faster than 10x200 and churns out
a lot more heat. At 10x200 1.5V I can turn my fan right down to 2k rpm and
stay in the low 40's C.

good/convenient a benchmark as any...

1463MHz(11x133)         145/48.6 (default 1700+)
1924MHz(12x160)         178.5/60.7
2084MHz(13x160)         186.9/63.4
2004MHz(10x200)         197.8/66.8 1.5V, prime95 no errors
2204MHz(11x200)         209.8/71.2 1.6V, prime95 errors
2305MHz(11.5x200)       214.5/72.9 1.8V, prime95 has a fit :o)
2260MHz(11x205)         215.4/73.1 1.7V, prime95 errors

I could have quoted comanche4 scores as well, but I think ut2003 probably
has better physics ;o)
