ABIT AX5 MotherBoard

Just incase anyone is interested, I recently installed a new motherboard,
an ABIT AX5.  It's an ATX board based on Intel's TX chipset (the PX5 is the
Baby-AT version) with 4 PCI and 4 ISA slots.  It as all of it's ports
integrated onto the board on a back plate (COMM1 and 2, LPT, PS2 Mouse and
Keyboard, as well as 2 USB ports).  It has 3 DIMM sockets for SDRAM, but
like the VX it can only cache 64megs.  It supports the 83mhz bus speed, and
I've found my P200MMX to be rock solid at 210Mhz (83x2.5) but I really
haven't tried pusing it to 250Mhz (83x3) yet.  For those of you with a
REndition card, my DMA score is in the mid to upper 80's.  So if anyone is
in the market for a new MB and doesn't mind the 64meg cache limitation of
the TX chipset, I would recommend this board or the PX5 (the AX5's sibling
for those without an ATX case and power supply) without hesitation.

Eric:

That was one of my speed secrets.  The Abit is killer

Yep.  The previous ABIT boards (such as the popular IT5H and IT5V) had
consistantly been the fastest and easiest to work with boards on the
market, and it would now seem that their new TX boards are no differnent.

I thought the IT5H rev.1.5 was the board to have.  I'm not sure what
an ATX board is though.

ATX refers to the form factor of the board (ATX, Baby-AT, etc.).  If you
need to cache more than 64megs of RAM an HX board like the IT5H rev1.5 is
the way to go.  If you don't need this than a TX board (such as the AX5 or
PX5) is a fine option.  Unlike the HX, they can use SDRAM, have support for
UltraDMA HD's, have better power management, etc.

The ATX is going to be the new standard for MOBO builders.
With the total remake of moving the processor closer to the
power supply and better wiring method(makes it easier to get
inside the case without most of the wires in the way).

The biggest issue with ATX is you need a new power supply and
a new case.

I recently decided the best and most affordable upgrade for me was to
buy a new mother board.  I have been reading on Tom's hardware page
about the IT5H and it seems like a good solution.  I am a neophyte at
mother boards.  My goal is to replace the crapy Intel Advanced EV that
came with my NEC, with something that is upward compatible and
overclock friendly.  It sounds like the IT5H is something I should be
abel to swap right in.  Does this sound right?  I still haven't
figured out if my RAM is though.  Can anyone help me out?

thanks in advance
Karter

You should be able to.  The worst case would be that you would need a new
case if everything doesn't quite line up right.
