I have an ABIT BE6-II MB that I am having a problem with. The only way I can
get the machine to get past the "UPDATING ESCD message in CMOS it to have an
old ISA sound card installed. The sound card has an PnP enable jumper on it.
Only when the this jumper is installed will the machine get passed updating
ESCD message. Now how do I get the machine to boot up without the ISA sound
card installed?

Two possibilities:

There is an option to enable/disable PnP in bios ("PnP OS installed?")
You could try to either enable or disable this, depending on how it's
set at present. This may be enough to get it running OK.

Also, there is another option to "force update ESCD". Try that one as
well.

Failing that, we'll clear the BIOS completely. I'd write down all the
settings you have in the bios, and then select "load failsafe
defaults". If this fails, then try clearing the CMOS, there's a jumper
on it somewhere marked "clear CMOS".

Oh yeah, make sure the card is not installed!

By any chance does this motherboard have onboard sound?

The one time I got the system hang at the "updating ESCD" message
was when I had blown up my SB Live sound card (long story) on my Abit
BH-6.  (Interestingly, it would hang here and not boot in WinME, but
the same [defective card] would boot in a Win95 or Win98 machine [I
forget which].  I assume you have WinME?)

Maybe your onboard sound (on the mb) is fried/broken/defective and
Windows needs to see a functioning sound card to get past ESCD?

Just a guess from my experience.  Good luck!

Thanks guys for the help. It looks like my AWARD Bios chip bit the dust.  Do

Oh man, fried bio's? if you can't re-flash it to get the computer to boot,
ya might as well buy another motherboard, as the price they get for just the
bios is almost as much as a motherboard. There are some tricks to "Hot
Flash" a fried bios. But you need a computer with the same motherboard up
and running and is not for the faint at heart. I've only done it a couple of
times in my computer history (7 years) and only on junk flea market boards.

Here are some links that maybe of some help;

http://www.badflash.com/
they advertise "for under $20+shipping" maybe the price has gone down, been
awhile for me.

http://www.wimsbios.com/  is the ole standard for bio's info.

Good Luck.
