Is it my imagination, or have PC games (and racing/driving sims, my personal
favourites) reached a hardware requirement watershed?

Just for the record, for the last 18 months my setup has been exactly the
same:

Pentium II 350
64Mb RAM
Old Sound Blaster 16
16Mb Voodoo Banshee PCI graphics

...and all the games (Driver, Midtown Madness 1 and 2, Viper Racing, GPL,
Nascar Legends, Dirt Track Racing, Colin McRae 1 and 2, and most of the NFS
series including Porsche Unleashed/2000) have all run at a very respectable
FPS rate, with no "jerking". All run in 640x480 or higher.

Is this some kind of record? I wonder how much longer my old Dell will hold
out, but it's done me proud up to now...!

Until all sims run at a *constant* 60fps with full details we are no
where near hitting a plateau.

Wow.  That's a bit less than my setup, and while older games play
fantastically
(like Network Q Rally) with all visuals set to on, SCGT gets rather chunky,
but
ONLY when qualifying and driving on the last 1/8th of the track.

I'm downloading Nurburgring right now...  hmm....

>Pentium II 350

Pentium II-233 purchased in late 1997.

        64MB also (EDO of course).

SBLive Value (Dang.  Points docked for being somewhat
up-to-date.)

Voodoo3 2000 (my motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot)

Getting the V3-2000 allowed me to race GPL online (at a smooth
enough rate to set personal bests [not due to warp!]) at 800x600 with
the detail slider in the middle.  I run two different carsets for
training and racing, though.

We need a judge (or someone to claim running GPL on a 386SX)!
Unfortunately, I fear the end is near for both our computers.  It's
looking like runing WSC would cause my rig to smoke, spark and sputter
'Does not compute...Does not compute...' in true 1960s sci-fi fashion.

I've got a celeron 400a / 128mb ram, tnt2 pro, and i'm finding that some of
the modern games are starting to get a bit jittery at times!  (Insane, and
GP3 are a bit dodgy!)

It is pretty much impossible to keep up to speed with the latest
technology!

Going on 30+ months here, except for the just-purchased 40 Gig HD.

        Pentium 233mmx.

        64 DRAM.

_Very_ old SB16--only one of my ISA slots has enough surrounding room
for the damn thing.

        Nor mine.  I have a Stealth 2 s220 and a Voodoo2.

Hrm.  GP2, ICR2, Nascar 99, now SCGT.  I can't get the new stuff, but
the old stuff works fine and still offers great experience.  I'll live.

Sorry, no judge.  I seem to win so far.  Of course, that's nothing to
celebrate.

                                        -Tim

Richard,

Did you know you can probably update that PC w/ a 750 or  850 mHz processor?
I just upgraded my Dell XPS R450 to an 850 w/ no problems. That should get
me another 18 months out of this machine, which will also be a record for
me.

Check out the DellTalk Hardware Upgrade forums at www.dell.com for more
info.

Regards,
Gordon
