GPL--new computer, big problems

by PowerPost200 » Wed, 19 Nov 2003 08:59:27

I just upgraded to a 2.4 GHz P4.
When I installed GPL, nothing worked.

I start the program, the sierra Sports page pops up for about 2
seconds, then it flashes back to my desktop.

I've tried software and D3D installations.
I installed GPL 1.2 update, cpu fix, gpl D3D patch and open GL patch,
but no luck.

My ATI radeon 9200 video card has Open GL support.

I had a similar problem with my old PII, but it would usually run a
few minutes before going back to the desktop. The solution was to add a
video accelerator (Diamond Monster 3D II) and use the 3Dfx setting.

I tried to install this card in the new machine, but the wizard said
there is no win XP driver available for it.  It even searched the
internet looking for software.

What else can I try?

Thanks

This is a typical symptom of using gpl on an NTFS partition. Allow
indexing on the gpl folder (folder properties, advanced). You don't need
to start the indexing service btw.

Sadly getting a Voodoo2 to work in XP is not that easy, but fortunately
there are 3rd party drivers you can try. http://www.falconfly.de/3dfx.htm
is as good a place as any to start.

Your 9200 should be able to handle either OpenGL or D3D well enough to
save you the trouble of setting up your V2 though. I understand D3D is
preferred for Ati cards.

Sounds like you need to make sure the Indexing Service is enabled for the
GPL directory (and subdirectories).
Open Windows Explorer and right click on the GPL directory. Click on the
"Advanced" button and make sure the check box for Indexing Service is
checked.

I just had the same issue with my new server hosting GPL races. I found out
that it was one of the custom track that would make the game crash after 2
seconds. Keep only genuin tracks in the track folder and try again. I didn't
found out which one it was.

thanks for the tip, guys.  Actually, the indexing box was already
checked.  But I went to the next box and unchecked "compress contents"
and tried again. this time it worked.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I've put together an FAQ for GPL at
http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=105748 but
it sounds like you got it going anyway.
