GPL - new computer - files required and (OT general benchmark)

by Karl Branki » Wed, 09 Jan 2002 06:41:13

Hi

I am awaiting delivery of a new computer and I am in the process of copying
the necessary files for the transition.

Which files do I need to copy to install GPL whilst retaining existing lap
records and AI strength. I have installed / converted extra tracks. Is there
an easy way to transfer without re-installing each track individually. MY
new computer will require CPU fix and D3D patch. Moving from PII 450 and
voodoo 3 to an Athlon XP1600 and geforce 3 TI200.

Any tips / shortcuts ?

Plus - slightly OT - I would like to compare performance of new computer
with existing one to see what real FPS benefit I have gained.
What game based benchmark are there to use ?

I know Nascar 4 has a FPS counter -  Is there a recognised test or is it
just a case of start at back of grid at X track and note FPS ?

Any views ?

Thanks

Hhhmm i would say the best way is to forget a full re-install and just zip
your whole gpl directory and burning it to cd.
Gpl doesnt need registry entries and the only prob u might get is u wont
be able to to use generic joystick driver (as the gpl install registers some
.dll's in windose) whenever i need to format c: I always just save my whole
version of GPL.
 hope this helps

HHHmmmm i dont think it should matter ... just make sure you have XP drivers
for your whole pc and make sure you set gfx options in GPL to default just
in case.

Have to agree with Dan. I've just set up a new WinXP box and just copied my
entire GPL folder from a Win98 box over the network (TCP). Works just the
same as it used to.

Everybody who is serious about GPL should have their entire GPL folder
structure backed up. What would you do if your hard drive died? How would
you recover your setups, car sets, tracks, etc.

I zip my entire GPL folder and copy it to a second hard drive every month or
so (not a separate partition, a physically separate HD). Then I burn that
Zip onto CD every once in a while (when I remember).

I do the Zip instead of just copying the files because that prevents the
read/only attribute from being set when it is copied to CD. Also, it is
getting too big for a single CD now, with all the addon tracks.

I have moved GPL to 3 separate PC's now and never had to reinstall it.

Great - I`ll do it that way. Thanks.

Any ideas re: Benchmarks or repeatable FPS tests ?

Thanks

Different benchmarks will favour different configurations but there's a few
choices... if you have it, Quake3 has a timedemo function.

Otherwise, 3DMark2001 (www.madonion.com) isn't perfect but it's OK.  I don't
trust this benchmark to compare ATi and Nvidea cards (as it is claimed to
favour one over the other) but nevertheless, it's a good way to really
stress your system.  The most useful feature is the online comparison so you
can check against similar configurations to see if you're getting the most
out of your system.

Ditto. GPL Race Engineer has trouble finding GPL now but other than that no
problems.  3DMark2001 is a very popular benchmark for gamers right now.

Correction. GPL Race Engineer finds if fine, SpyGirl likes to say
"path not found" but then it works anyway, so, no problems.

Actually these days Dark Age of Camelot (an online RPG) game is taking up
most of my *** time, to my chagrin. It's the software equivalent of
*** ("OK I'll just play another 1/2 hour, I'm almost to level 31...").

A GPL benchmark used before is:

- max out all GPL options (textures, detail, max sounds, etc)
- start a single race with max AI (19?) at the back
  of the grid at Monaco
- just leave the car stationary and check the FPS as follows:

   1 min FPS at start
2 FPS when last AI disappears after the first right hander
3 max FPS before being kicked out

Repeat at resolutions of your choice, with/without FSAA etc.

Thanks Mats - I`ll try that test.

What about repeatable benchmarks / built in tests in other sims ?

Thanks
