GPL Problems with Computer Upgrade

Can Anyone Offer Any Advice?

I recently upgraded my CPU on my ABIT BH6 motherboard from a Celeron
300a to a Celeron 566a.  I have a Voodoo3  3000 video card with 128Mb of
RAM.  I successfully had my Celeron 300a overclocked to 450Mhz and
currently have my Celeron 566a overclocked to 850Mhz.  Currently I can
run all applications, including the Nascar 4 demo (with great fps) and
some tracks in GPL (also with great fps).  Certain GPL tracks refuse to
load and bounce me out to the Windows desktop.  Other tracks (Solitude,
Mexico, Watkins, Bugatti, Zandvoort, among them) will load, allowing me
to race, but on occasionally, will boot me out to the Windows desktop.
Some replays, similar to the tracks will run.  I can run all GPL tracks
at 566Mhz with no problem, but I am looking for the faster framerate.
The maximum temperature that I have seen of the processor in the
Motherboard SoftMenu is 29oC, which I assume is good.  I have a Golden
Orb heatsink and fan on the CPU.  Also, GPL repeatedly sends me to the
Solitude track in the single race screen, even though I did not finish
with this race when last in GPL.

I would appreciate any help that any of you might be able to offer.

Thanks,

Wayne

GPL Problems with Computer Upgrade

Your computer upgrade was EXACTLY like mine, (same MoBo and processors and
O/c speeds) except that I'm using 2 Voodoo2's in SLI, rather than a
Voodoo3.  I have never encountered any of these problems -- not even once,
so I don't think it's anything inherent with your overclocking.  Although
your temp is about like mine (32C at the moment), do these anomalies happen
only after the PC has been on for awhile?  If so, it could be a heat buildup
problem.

Have you tried re-installing GPL?  You could save all of your setups and
replays offline and re-install them after GPL.  (Your non-original tracks
would also have to be re-installed).

One other thought:  Although I don't think that 29C is too hot, try taking
the cover off of the case  and blow a desk fan right into the case (That's
what I do).

Hope this helps....

GPL Problems with Computer Upgrade

I have the same setup as you and have had no probs with this.
I did get some desktop crashes every so often, but I was clocking
my card from 143 up to 165 without any extra cooling.
I recently upgraded to a V5 and now get no desktop crashes.
I use the D3D version of GPL since it allows the V5 to use large texture
mips.
I did however just update the Abit BH6 BIOS to the newest BH6 1.0 version,
which is the SS version that supports the Cel II 566 processors.
I had the NV bios before when I was using my V3 2000, but like I said did
not
get any problems.
Got to http://www.abit-usa.com/ and upgrade your bios.

Now I have a V5, 256 Mb PC133 CAS3 RAM, and the newest SS bios.
The only game that crashes to the desktop is Madden 2k1 which is a know
issue with
that game.
Hope you figure it out.
I suppose it is a heat issue since this usually causes these problems.
Either that or if your card is an AGP, make sure any PCI cards are AT LEAST
one
slot away from the AGP card.
Therefore, there should be no cards in PCI slot 1.
Hope this helps.

-Dominic.

[snip]

Wayne--

I've always been taught to wipe the hard drive and reinstall OS and all apps
after a major hardware upgrade like processor. Some might think it's
overkill, but if you're having strange problems and there are no obvious
issues, you might want to bite the bullet and go throught the hassle.

Good luck!

The BH6 doesn't have a CPU temperature sensor. The sensor is at the
end of one of the pci slots and only gives you case temperature.
(Can't remember which one). If a CPU is at the limit of overclocking
its not unusual to get crashes in CPU intensive games like GPL.

Wow...same setup here...before and after.

Never had a problem, either with tracks, being pitched back to the desktop,
etc.

I do have a large heatsink and fan on the CPU, a fan at the front of the
case bringing air in, and a slot fan right below the Voo Doo3 sucking air
out.  Stable , temperature ok, with the case closed which helps getting a
good air flow inside.

Sorry...dunno what to say that would help.

I have the same setup.  What voltage are you running?  Try increasing the
voltage and see if it is more stable.  I had to reflash my bios to get to
the higher voltage range to make it stable.

My voltage is set at 1.8.  Tried all from 1.65 though 1.85.  It seems that the
most stable (such as it is) is 1.8V.  And yes, I did reflash my bios to get
the selection.

I had that problem as well, go to the CD & copy the track folders or all
files from the track folders that don't work onto the hard drive in same
track folder.
My now works on all tracks again.

Thanks, I realize my problem is related to an overheated/unstable chip at too
high a voltage setting.  GPL runs fine at 707Mhz (83Mhz fsb and an 8.5
multiplier) set at the nominal 1.5V.
