F1 2001 - first impressions!?!

by John Bod » Sun, 07 Oct 2001 04:54:13

The planet of pathetic driver mismatches, I think -- why else would
you use Detonator drivers that are optimized for the GeForce3 with a
GeForce2 Ultra?

Alternate answer:  The plant of people who have not yet learned the
advantages of running F1 2001 in windowed mode if you're using newer
Detonator drivers . . .

:-p

F1 2001 - first impressions!?!

I am quite surprised at this. I also saw F1 2001 at the SAP tent
at the USGP. It looked essentially the same as F1 2000 CS. The
framerate was fine and there were no issues like this at all.

Sorry, you're very wrong there. The 21.81 (not 20.xx) drivers were a big
leap forward from the 12.90s I was previously using on everything except F1

You must be a GPL fanatic.  Everything you've complained about, except one
thing, has anything to do with the game being good or not so good.

Irrlevant.

> 2)  Graphics are very poor.  Looks like a cartoon - very unreal and overly

> EXCEPT for the fact that every 5 seconds or so everything looks and feels
> like travelling through treacle for 1-2 seconds.

Disagree but still not relevant, as long as frame rate doesn't affect the
play of the game.

Though I disagree with this at least this one thing is actually to the game
itself.

Sound is irrating, I agree.  But this, again, is irrelevant.

Disagree-- can't see how any of the above reasons could be the reason for
your being "unable to race in any way competitive", except for reason three.

Try going to 16 bit.  The mirrors work for me, just fine, though not at 32
bit.

Who cares.

That's probably your system's set up.

Seeing that it appears that you are wanting desparately to find things wrong
with F1 2001-- my suspicion is that you're a GPL snob-- I have no doubt that
you will find things.  Oveall, I think most of your complaints have nothing
to do with the way the game plays as a simulation.

A GPL snob with a little bit of anti-EA peppered in?

I'm running on XP also.  I've not noticed what you've noticed, especially
with the graphic's gliches.

I have FF turned off in SCGT and F1CS2K because it is so bad in those
games.  All I could ever feel were bumps and collisions, there was no
centering feel, no change in stiffness due to weight transfer, no loss
of aligning torque when you exceed the traction limit.  In short, none
of the things that make FF worth having in a racing sim.  So I for one
am glad to see that the crappy FF will not be back in F1 2001.  The fact
that they didn't put FF in the PC release means we won't get it until
they are satisfied that they have done it right.  As for using an FF
wheel without forces, it's very simple to do.  In those games I have
turned on a centering spring in the wheel's profiling software, and they
work just fine that way.  Plus unlike a non-FF wheel you can tune the
stiffness to your liking.  Perhaps your wheel has that capability too.

F1 2001 - first impressions!?!

by Stephen Smit » Sun, 07 Oct 2001 10:45:35

Calm down, John; Thomas there wasn't asking what planet *you* were from--I
think his comments were directed at Iain.  I don't think Iain has had much
experience with GPL and his GF2/21.xx Det combo; a lot of people including
me had trouble there and went back to the earlier drivers.  He seems miffed
at the VERY IDEA that the latest drivers aren't giving him the best
performance.

The other point seems to be that he'd rather have bad FF than no feedback at
all.  One of the F1 2001 designers seemed acutely embarrassed at the FF
implementation in F1CS and said he'd rather have no FF than bad FF,
promising a patch to solve the problem later on.  Of course, a lot of people
are still waiting for the patch for F1 2000.  The only FF I've seen (or
felt) that does anything to help you drive the car is Papy's (in GPL & N4),
altho the implementation in Mobil 1 Rally Championship was near-great--I
loved how *all* feeling went away when you were skating across a patch of
the dreaded Black Ice (no, not the firewall).
