GTR2002 and New Videocard

by bertr » Sun, 16 Feb 2003 04:24:12

Just installed my new Radeon 9700 Pro [apparently successfully  8-)],
and would like to try out GTR2002.  However, when I start her up, after
the Pre-Game menu, I get brought to the dreaded 3D Setup screen.  Past
expereince has shown me that continuing on from here will load F1-2002,
instead of GTR2002.  How do I avoid this from happening, or what adjust
ments do I need to make to have GTR 2002 load again?

Thanks!

Run the 3d setup from within F12002, and let the game continue.  Exit F12002
and then
run GTR2002.  It should now skip the setup part and take you right into the
GTR game.

Start F1 2002 and configure it. Then take the lines from the config file
from the line under Grid Size=  thru vbstrategy=1 and copy them. Go to
gtr2002 config and delete same lines and paste the ones from f12002 config.
Everything should work fine

After you've done the 3dconfig again and played for a bit let us know what
kind of framerates you're getting. Thinking about getting the same card but
I want to know what to expect first.

Well, keep in mind that this is without doing much tweaking, and no
overclocking.  3DConfig reported something like 55 Million triangles -- almost
double what it reported with my Radeon 8500LE.  In GTR 2002 itself, I get
around 70-75 FPS in a test session and around 40 FPS in a race with 14
opponents, with me at the back of the grid.  It runs VERY smoothly.

My vidcard's graphic settings for D3D are:  4X AA and 8X AF at 1024x768 - 32bit
color.

My system is an Athlon 1700XP (not overclocked) using Win98SE and the new
Catalyst 3.1 drivers..  3DMark 2001 reports a score of around 11,500 - a good
3,000 more than with my 8500LE.  Another bonus is that I can now run the road
courses in NR2003 (but that may have worked with the old vidcard and the new
Catalyst drivers, as well -- I dunno).

Hope that this gives you some idea.....  8-)

Cool!!!!!!

The only prob is now I see that the athlon 2400+ has dropped down more than
100 bucks to 2 something.  I have a 1800+ and Radeon 8500. What should it
be?

GTR2002 and New Videocard

Whoops -- Gotta revise some of my numbers.  First off the 11500 (or thereabouts)
in 3DMark2001SE was with AA and AF TURNED OFF.  With AA at 4X and AF at 8X, my
FPS in GTR2002 Test Session is in the low 40's.  The interesting thing about it
is that my FPS in a race with 14 opponents (same graphics set-up) yields about
the same FPS.  Not much of a hit at all between Test Session and Race.  In any
event, no matter what the FPS is, it runs really smooth.  (Note that in replays,
the FPS is reported around  the low 20's, but it still runs smoothly.  I think
that the FPS isn't being reported acccurately for some reason).

I've bought an AthlonXP2100+ (about $93 at NewEgg), but haven't gotten it
installed becaise of problems upgarding my BIOS.  Got a new BIOS chip coming in
a few days, so hopefully I'll have that problem resolved.  Anyways, you might
want to consider the 2100 instead of the 2400.  In terms of its
overclockability, they say that the 2100 can be made to perfrom on par with a
2600 in some cases.  AFAIK, the 2100 is the most bang for the buck at the
present time.  Save some $$$ and buy a new CPU and a new vidcard.  8-)

Hope that this updated info helps....

Good Luck with your choice.

BRH <
Keep in mind there are TWO versions of the XP2100+  A Palomino and a
Thoroughbred.  One costs a little more than the other and probably is the
one which is overclockable...which is which?  I can never keep them
straight... I honestly don't know.  I can barely keep my xp2100+ cool with
the stock fan...I use my trusty 12 inch desktop rotating fan for extra
cooling.

The latest and greatest version is the Thoroughbred 'B'.  It does cost a few
$$ more -- as I said, it's about $93 at NewEgg at the present time.  That's
the version with the unlocked multiplier (ie - easier to overclock).

Dave...I have the same xp2100+ running at xp2380+ with a Thermalright SLK800
heatsink and a near silent Akasa 80mm fan.which i swapped recently after
using a Delta Concorde Is Here 80mm fan...lol

The temperatures range from 35 deg at idle on a normal day  to 48 running
GTR 2002 for very long periods on my home lan.

It is rock solid stable and after i got the right voltage it has never
caused any problems.

See with the stock fan,  I START at about 47 with no load..and if I
really spend a long time simming it will be in the mid to high 50's when I
exit.
Guess I'd better dig into a real heatsink/fan combo.
