Thanks.  The mp news sounds promising.........but, have to see what
actually happens when run in league format, the preferred method for myself.

Yeah, us road racers have been starved of a decent sim for league racing for
a long time.  There hasn't been anything good since GPL and it's been
feeling very dated the last few years despite some excellent mods.

I am very e***d about this one.  Adding weight to cars should make it good
fun for evening the fields each week for leagues as well.  Now I just need
to figure out how to read German before my copy arrives.

That awful lag when people join and leave the server, basically ruined
GTR2002 leagues and in lesser extend, F1C league, at least here in Finland.
When person X crashed in race and then quit, the lag caused a somebody else
or number of people to crash too, which then caused...

Doesn't look too bright on that part :( Looks like F1C netcode really hasn't
been changed by Simbin that much, if at all.

Whats in German?  The screenshots (from Steve's post) all showed English
menu's.  The Docs arent real important to me as I can just come here and ask
Uwe :)  If thats all thats in German Im going to place an order very soon.

I sure like the sound of the warp free collision detection.  No more cars
flying off the track with a slight touch :-)   Thats one thing I sure wont
miss from Papy multi.

So, when will it be released in the US?

talked about. Nothing definite though.

Well, I didn't play much F1C online due mainly to the crappy netcode but the
pause when people joined wasn't really a big deal.  It certainly didn't
happen when people quit.  Like the article says, you can set the server to
disallow people from joining during qualifying and the race which pretty
much solves the problem.  You could do the same in F1C.  How bad the pause
is depends on the speed of the server - if you've got a real beast of a
dedicated server with RAID etc the pause when the server loads the new car
textures etc is barely noticeable.  I'm sure there must have been a lot of
people hosting F1C races on laptops with 64MB of RAM at times!

Simbin delayed the game several times because they weren't satisfied with
the netcode.  I doubt they would release it in a sloppy state knowing that
it's going to be one of the game's main selling points - especially since
they're talking about hosting their own online competitions etc.  We live in
hope....

Mitch,

The release next week is the German version which is rumored to be
exclusively in German, menus, garage, crew etc.  Might be a challenge, but I
am not willing to wait 3-4 months for a copy.

Speaking of German, AutoBild (popular car magazine in Germany) had a two
page article on GTR, praising it for its accuracy.  They had a few GTR
drivers testing it out.  Of course, not all car magazine writers are as good
as our Mr. Smith at separating the wheat from the chaff, but I find it
promising that it is getting this kind of media attention.

Stephen

p.s. they also praised "modest" system requirements

Global publisher has not been announced yet, thus no date has been

Scandinavian release is planned for 1Q/2005, but I'm a bit sceptical
as the scandinavian release was originally supposed to be october
29th...

I don't see why you hated it for Papy, as what they wrote is *exactly* the
same thing as what Papy does.  "Warp free collision detection" = eliminated
the zig-zagging with a prediction code.  Prediction coding smoothes
everything but adds an element where cars can for an instant turn inside
each other if they reappear correctly and create impossible physical
collisions.

No prediction coding simply make for something else... WARP.  Perhaps in a
perfect network with unlimited bandwidth it's possible (ex : a LAN type
system which btw even isn't perfect and still needs a prediction code), but
on the Internet you have to have a prediction code.

It's the basis that makes any simracing community live.  Without this,
multiplayer racing will never be good even if there's a good set of
community tools.  Without it, when the server loses a fraction of where
somebody is or misses a fraction of the relay of somebody else, the cars
will be shown erratically (warping).  Prediction code, smoothes everything
out and eliminated extreme warping.  You often see that in GPL as they
increase the bandwidth requirement.  Cars zig-zag around the corners, they
turn in a very "stairway" style.
