Advice needed for a FF wheel.

by Aahzmandiu » Wed, 15 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I'm looking at one of three, any and all help would be appreciated.

The Guillemot Ferrari ($120 or so).
The Logitech Wingman ($150 or so).
The Act Labs RS with the Shifter ($190 or so).

I've used the Logitech and it's okay, the paddles are covenient, but I
find the wheel itself a little small.  Maybe it's just my imagination,
but it seems that way to me.  The only problem I have with the pedals
is the short throw, they seem to be stable and nonskid (at least for
me).  I would probably get used to it after a little while.

I'm just getting into Racing, but I don't mind spending the money, if
it's a good wheel.

Any and all advice would be apreciated.

Thanks.

I bought an Act Labs and returned it.  I have all the respect in the world
for the company and their products, but the Logitech is much better suited
for GPL.  It's cable driven mechanism is the smoothest of all the FF wheels.
The pedals aren't superfantastic, but if you replace the springs and add
some pedal covers they're more then adequate.

Haven't driven with a Microsoft FF, but tried one in the store and was
impressed.  If Microsoft would stick with hardware and leave software to the
pros, then I'd be a happy camper.

I wasn't impressed at all with the Logitech FF Wingman Formula. I
installed it, but got the blue screen at multiple occasions, horrible
frame rates and sound stuttering in N3. When I uninstalled it, my game
was back to normal. After spending an hour over the phone with the
Logitech tech support, and them giving me "the wheel is not compatible
with your pc" spiel, I decided to buy an ACT-Labs wheel. It's on its way
now hope this one works.

I've had the LWFF for over 16 months. I use it every day with not one
problem or complaint and will probably purchase another one if, or when,
Jens' ball bearing conversion kits become available.

I have found that choosing a wheel is a lot like choosing a guitar, I love
my ol' Martin D-35 but you may be looking for a screamin' 61 Strat. There is
no one "perfect" wheel for everyone. Try out as many as you can.

If money is not a problem, then go for the Shifter.  Otherwise you
could go with just the Force RS for $139.99

Well, it's the usual story, everyone has a different view.
For over a year I used the SC&T Ultimate Per4mer wheel (no longer supported)
but I got fed up with the akward angle that it sits on the desk. I then
bought an MS wheel but after trying the Logitech and the Guillemot for a
while, I bought the Guillemot, and I'll say that it is the best in my
opinion!
The SC&T had the best (strongest) forces, the MS wheel had a good (albeit
somewhat mechanical) feel, the Logitech had unacceptable pedals and poor
forces, but the Guillemot is very well constructed, feels great, has a gear
shifter for rally sims, good pedals, and has good subtle forces in GPL.

Advice needed for a FF wheel.

by Jan Hoviu » Thu, 16 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Philippe,

I'm sorry to disagree with you on your assumption the LWFF isn't good because
your total system is acting strange after installation. It is of course clear
that something is wrong in your configuration, the logitech does operate good and
in a very impressive way (referring to GPL) for almost one year now at my desk.
Of course it might be that your unit was broke (doubt it) but it doesn't
contribute to the discussion whether the logitech in overall is good or not. By
what I've read so far everybody agrees that the LWFF does a very accurate job
with regards to being able to transmit very subtle FF-nuances  from the sim (GPL,
the only sim with proper FF implementation 'til now)to your hands. As for what
I've read in this group and surroundings no other wheel can compete with it.
point! Fact is the pedals are a weak compared to other wheel-combo's but that can
easily be solved by inserting stiffer springs.

Please don't be offended but don't be surprised you experience problems too when
installing the ACT Labs since a truly have the feeling something else isn't
properly functioning in your system.

Jan.

Watch out for the LWFF from China. Quality is poor, and you do not get any
help form Logitech because they think it's good enough. Just ask Jens.

Not saying the wheel is not good, just saying it didn't work so I wasn't
able to test it. Previous wheels worked fine on my system, all of them
Thrustmaster products... GP1 (several of them), Nascar Charger and the
Formula T1. Too bad the GP1 is no longer produce as I really liked the
paddles behind the wheel. The only other wheel like that is the Thomas
Enterprises, but it's quite expensive.

In any case, maybe I do have a problem with my system, but fact is the
Logitech tech support wasn't able to help me solve it so I try to find
another one. If the ACT-Labs works, the joke will be on Logitech and you
;)

Make sure you have DirectX 7.0a and install the latest drivers from

There is a sticker on the bottom of the wheel unit which states the country
of origin. I do not know this for a fact, but it has been claimed that the
wheels from China have had a run of bent steering shafts and do not seem to
be built as well as the wheels from Maylasia.

Mine is made in Taiwan, should that be a good or a bad wheel then?
Don't have any problems with it so far, 6 months testing, 2-3 hours a
day...
