F1-RC or F1-CS2K ?????

by Tim Deatherag » Sun, 09 Sep 2001 10:15:10

I am contemplating buying one of the above Formula games but the kid at the
local Software Etc. knew NOTHING
so
I was wondering what the consensus is the better Sim for an older PIII 450
with a 3dfx AGP 3000 card and a SB Live Sound card

Any suggestions ?????????????

AS ALWAYS, THANKS  !!!!!!!!!!!

Neither, unless you're dying for an F1 sim right now.  The successor to F1CS2K, F12001 is due out late this month, I believe, and is
said to have a much more efficient graphics engine than its predecessors.  There should be a few reviews out within a few days as
well, - eh JB?  ;-)

Just wait a few weeks until F1CS 2001 comes out and get that.

It should run better than both F1RC and F1CS.

The only "slowdowns" you will get will be at the starts, but
after that its fine.

If I can run both games fine on a Celeron 366 and TNT1, I think it
should be fine for you.

F1-RC or F1-CS2K ?????

by Dave Henri » Sun, 09 Sep 2001 22:33:34

I have spent a lot of time lately farting around with CS and trying to
even out the framerate.  I found one odd stumbling block that was really
destroying my fps.  I have a PIII 500 and usually overclock it with softFSB
to 559(big jump eh ??  not....)  :)   anyhow, the menus would stutter and
any new sounds would briefly pause the whole sim when it was overclocked.
Even with extremely low resoulutions, and details.  I've backed off the
oc'ing, and hit a really smooth spot on the graphics.  Generally set most
graphics to medium and turn off the bridges and a few other items.  (of
course I only use the mirrors for brief checks)
Is that perfect?  no but the hiccups are gone.  I thought I would never
get a smooth framerate from CS, but it's pretty decent now.
However....if you are big into F1, then it wouldn't hurt to compare the
new 2001 version due out shortly.   My biggest gripe with all these F1 sims
are the tracks.   Damn chicanes EVERYWHERE.

My point was that F12001 is touted to have a much more efficient graphics engine than either of its two predecessors, thus being
LESS demanding of his computer.  We'll soon see if that holds water, as my aged 450/V3 will tell...

Maybe www.f1rcrelay.com will help you with your decision. It is the most
advanced online community for racing today, including real-time statistics
tracking, consistency rankings, skill rankings, etc.

Anyways... take a pek, maybe F1RC is the one for you, or maybe not.

Cheers,

Too bad about F1RC's "perfect"-yet-surrealistic tracks and

John Bod

F1-RC or F1-CS2K ?????

by John Bod » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 13:57:13

Yes, gladly:

IMO, the tracks in F1RC look glorious, but they are WAY too smooth.  I
get the idea that I'm driving on glass, not a real track.  That busts
the "simulation" aspect for me in a big way.

Similarly, the physics modeling is WAY too uncommunicative for me.
I'm not a Force Feedback fan at all, but with things like GPL, NASCAR
Heat, or F1CS2K, I can REALLY feel when the car is approaching the
limits of adhesion, and when things go wrong, I know WHY they went
wrong and what I did to make it all happen.  With F1RC, I never have a
clue when I'm approaching the limit, or why things go wrong when I
find myself swapping ends.  Again, this really takes away from the
"simulation" aspect for me, and overall, F1RC feels far too much like
F1WGP for my taste.

That doesn't mean it's bad by any stretch -- it just means that F1RC
doesn't tickle my sim senses in a pleasurable way, and I know a lot of
other people who feel the same way.  At the same time, there are lots
of people who REALLY like F1RC.  Neither camp is inherently right or
wrong -- it all comes down to a matter of taste.

I tossed my comment out because I really want to like F1RC, but it's
just not immersive enough for me.  So, no matter how good Schumi's
F1RC Relay is, it's just not going to do it for me.

F1-RC or F1-CS2K ?????

by John Bod » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 14:00:55

Clarification:

I'm not a Force Feedback fan, and I don't use a Force Feedback setup,
but even WITHOUT Force Feedback in sims like GPL, NASCAR Heat, or
F1CS2K, I can STILL feel when the car is approaching the limits of
adhesion, and when things go wrong, I know WHY they went wrong and
what I did to make it all happen -- even WITHOUT Force Feedback.

F1-RC or F1-CS2K ?????

by David G Fishe » Mon, 10 Sep 2001 14:05:03

Gotcha. Yes, the tracks are probably too smooth.

As for the physics, I absolutely love the way the car in F1RC communicates
to me when it's near the limit. Contolled slides. The whole bit.

Strange how people view sims. I sometimes think controller, controller
setup, and computer system have more to do with the different "feel" than
anything else.
