A Taste of Nurburgring GPL Style!

I've stumbled across a great little site that includes a map and a few photos of the old (with new alongside) Nurburgring track a'la 1967 and there abouts.

What's more you can zoom in on the track SECTION by SECTION and it includes details as to ideal line, bridges, barriers and the incline of the track!!

Check it out here: http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Looking at the track it will be a real challenge to learn the whole 20.832 k's complete with fast sweepers, 's-bends' tight and flat out, treacherous hairpins and more.  The new site 'High Gear, Into the Slipstream' ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/) claims that the Nurburgring race will last only :) 15 laps!!  To compare our little go-kart track at Watkins Glens will feature a 108 lap race.

I hope this infomation is of interest to you as we count down the months (come on we know it will be longer than Aug/Sep/Oct) until GPL is finally released!

*Only* eight laps, Matt??!! :o)
You do understand just how long a lap is and how many corners there are
each lap? :o)
It will, thank God, take a l-o-o-o-ng time to remember every inch of
this circuit!

As I practice at Watkins Glen I wonder about how the great GPL drivers
(Sandman, Mansell, Jay, etc) do it.  Will they memorize every corner and
perfect the lines and brake points for every track?  Or do they just
*know* when to do what it takes to get through the corners...

I understood from the "high gear" site  ( http://www.racingsims.com/ ) that the Nurburgring race would last 15 laps, I think 8 would be too few. (20kms x 8 is only 160 kms but 20kms x 15 is 300kms) I'm just guessing but 15 laps seems to be more like the length of a Grand Prix Race especially in '67.

What do you think?

I do know how long the track is (refer to original posting), and I agree with you it will take a long time to learn!  Apparently I heard somewhere that one of the games' testers took a half hour to complete their first lap.  Of course race times will be alot quicker but by the sounds of it we are in for a lot of 'free-practice'!

The person that took half an hour to do a lap actually works for Papyrus :-)

The race at Nurburgring was certainly more than 8 laps.
I had a feeling that it was 14 laps but I can't validate that at the
moment.

At least we get as much free practice as we want!  I wonder how much
practice the actual GP drivers got before a race on the 'Ring!

And even longer to develope a perfect setup for it!

hmmm....    ;-)

The Nurburgring in GPL is 14.2 miles  or 22.8 kilometers in lenght.   The
track has 174 corner.  In 1967, the race was held on 15laps around the
circuit.

In the meantime you can always have a look here:

http://cbsgi1.bu.edu/bmw/nurbcgi.html

It has a pretty detailed description of the circuit, with the racing
line marked, and driving instructions. Whether it's exactly the same now
as it was in the 60's, I don't know.

Usually it was practice/qualify on Saturday only.
Back then the practice sessions could be timed too, so any time that a
car was on the circuit they could effectively be "qualifying".
