No, practice was definetely on Friday, too. I'm not absolutely sure,
but I think they also drove on Thursday (at the Ring).

Roger that info, Thor.
I thought only Monaco had Thursday practice/qualifying but that may be
now, not back then.

Well, obviously I cannot speak for drivers long dead, but
in racing you have to know the race track by heart, every corner,
every bump, every braking point, in order to be smooth and thus fast.
It takes me about 20--30 laps to learn a new track like Watkins Glen,
and once you've got all the corners figured out I start etching away
the tenth's by braking later, taking a slightly different line
and so on. Still my best is only a 1:16 in the lotus, and that time
sucks. ;-)

Hi all,

I'm not sure, if the old suedschleife was still open in 1967.
Certainly 22,8 km was after shortening the Suedschleife to the
Suedkehre.
Including the Suedschleife, the old Nuerburgring was about 26,?? km.
I'm quite sure about that distances, because I lived near the ring and
also found the rests of the Suedschleife in 198? - still drivable with
motorbike. Now everything gone by the finishing of the new
Nuerburgring - puuuuaaaaahhhh!!!

Regards
Jens

BTW: Just trying to install GPL-Demo with Win98 - any idea? always
*** after switch to track with horrible noises.

In '67 the Sudschleife still existed, but it was never shortened to the
Sudkehre! The Sudkehre was always a part of the Nordschleife.
In fact the Nordschleife and the Sudschleife were not driven as one
racetrack. They were handled as two different tracks, also the
Sudschleife hasn't seen extensive use.
Ok, the Sudkehre was also part of the Sudschleife. This is where both
tracks met.

Cheers,

If you can get your hands on a copy of the video "In-Car 956" you can ride
along with Derek Bell in a Porsche 956 in (I think) 1981 or 1982 on the
Nurburgring long circuit.  That'll give you a good idea of the track layout,
as well the challenge of learning the damn place!

>> Check it out here: http://cbsgi1.bu.edu/bmw/nurbcgi.html

A Taste of Nurburgring GPL Style!

Sunday night, I watched Speedvision's "Legends of Motorsports" program. That
particular episode was about the 1973 season. They had a wicked bit with
Jackie Stewart driving a lap of the Nurburgring with an on-board camera,
along with him describing it. Whilst they did not show the entire lap, they
showed the most exciting parts... WOW!!!

He said that at some points, the G's were so strong, it was physically
impossible to lift his foot and apply the brake (if need be). He says that
if he were to have actually walked around the track, there would have been
no way he would ever have driven it again, as well as this great quote: "The
faster you complete a lap, the less time you have to think about what you're
actually doing." He said he was terrified of that track: safety barriers
(armcos) were on the left side of the track at one section, but as he
pointed out, the right side of the track is where you're going to go off..
and there's nothing but trees and rocks on that side!

I'd never seen any laps of the Nurburgring before, but I'd heard much about
it. Now I've seen it.. I still can't believe it! Unbelievable.. Just can't
wait till GPL comes out.. I know I'm going to "die" (or should die) many
times.

doktorB
(P.S.) does anyone in England know if Motorsport Magazine with the video
"Nine Days in Summer" is still available on the newstand. I want it badly!!
If anyone could email me with an answer, I'd greatly appreciate it!
