GPL Nurburgring

From browsing various GPL resources I understand that you can modify
existing tracks or model new ones.

I'm interested in getting hold of a "current" version of the Nurburgring to
practice on (I'm intending to do a motorbike course there next year). Does
anyone know if such a thing exists?

If one doesn't exist I might have a go at editing the track supplied with
the game, as I don't think there have been many changes since the GPL years.
What would be the best way to do this (I'm not too bothered about scenery,
more the track layout).

Thanks

David

Well there is a semi-whole version of the new circuit for CART Precision
Racing.  The limit is like 5 miles per track so the person who designed it
split it into 3 parts, but its still all there and a blast to drive. I forget
the URL of the site though.  Anyone happen to know it???

Editing the tack in GPL is near impossible unless your name is David Noonan
(who created Brands Hatch from scratch).  If you want something close to the
current 15 some odd mile course (that includes the modern GP circuit), pick up
a cpoy of OF1R, MGPRS2, or F1RS which has the modern GP circuit.  That combined
with the GPL version should give you a rough idea of the line around both
"halves" of the 15 mile course.  However thats 90 bucks for both games that
might be better spent elsewhere.  But thats up to you.

This site has a map of the ring and blow up pictures of sections with the
driving lines on it which i found invaluable even as a resourse for GPL.

Hope ive been of some help.

The only one that gives you any "rough idea" of the long old course of
N. is really only GPL! The modern track is "outside" of the old one!
Those OF1R, MGPRS2, or F1RS are not very good representations of that,
either! The GP2 track of the "Track Pack" was really quite good one!
And MGPRS2 is one of the better ones by them!

Ok i retract my statement about the new course.  I forgot about the GP2 version
(it was my fav track in that game) because i havent driven that game in about a
year.  But the GPL 'Ring is definately the best representatinon i agree.

Hmmm ... are you talking about Nordschleife or the GP track?

The Papy presentation of Nordschleife is almost spot on! No editing needed.
If you know your way around in GPL, you'll be fine on the actual circuit.
See my report at

Can't help you with the GP track, though

Except that the start und ziel and sudkurve arn't there any more.
I was at the 'ring last week, and I can tell you the layout of GPL is pretty
spot on, but there is some serious banking on some of the curves that you
don't get the impression of in GPL. Also the gradients seem much steeper in
real life.
Other changes to the track since 1969 are mainly the plaining off of some of
the yumps and take off ramps.

Of they aren't :). That's where the GP track is now ...

They do, don't they. However, I saw a an in-bike video footage of an entire
lap around Nordschleife, and in that video the elevation changes looked
EXACTLY like in GPL. So, I think 2D view is playing tricks with our eyes
both on video and in GPL.

I was talking about the Nordschleife. I read Hena Hakkanen's report and from
what I remember of the five laps I did last year I had pretty similar
experience, the sharp right hander where the Nordschleife meets the GP track
nearly caught me out as well.

me too!

gpl2 idea time: how about moving the gpl letterbox up the screen when
you're driving uphill and down when going down.  it may not be
'realistic' but at least you would be forced to tilt your head up and
down a bit, which may help give an impression of driving up and down
hills.

on seconds thoughts, it sounds a bit like torture, but maybe worth a
try.
