GPL screen flicker

by Lindsay Adam » Thu, 24 Dec 1998 04:00:00

hey there - I'm experiencing some strange screen flickers in GPL. It happens
about 3 or 4 times  a lap at Kyalami. The screen just "flicks" momentarily
and then carries on like nothng happened...

any idea how I can get rid of it 'cause its very irritating?

I have a Celeron 300a (o/c 464)
dual Creative voodoo2 SLI with reference (dx6) drivers
dx6.1
matrox millenium 2 wit rainbow runner
192Mb RAM
scsi hdds
swapfile 100Mb (never uses more than 75Mb) - on non system, fastest drive
msoft sidewinder ffb wheel

thanx in advance

-Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

Is this online or offline? If you're online that "flash" occurs when
someone else does Shift-R to reset their car after an accident. It can
be pretty offputting during a race or at an awkward moment.

Cheers!

GPL screen flicker

John,

its offline - I do get things happening online (like slow downs when people
join etc - but its I'm not too bothered as its online and to expect the same
performance is unrealistic.)

I've also checked the vsync and had it off and on - but the problem's still
there.

my system hasn't been "rebuilt"( hardware etc has been upgraded/changed many
times with plenty installs/deinstalls and trials of software but 98 has
never been clean installed since before 95 osr1, osr2, 98 beta, rc0 final
release etc etc) so the sytem is probably getting a little "fat" - I was
trying to avoid having to do that and hoped there may be some easy fix.

Just have to bite the bullet and make it like new again.....

regards
-Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

I also have this problem offline. As you say its very irritating.

I have a Celeron 300a in a ABit BH6 mb - not o/c'd ( no need. I get 36
fps just about all the time anyway so what's the point ? ). 64mb PC100
ram, Hercules 3D Thriller 8mb AGP, 16 bit Vibra ( Sound Blaster OEM )
non-PnP ISA sound card, a USB  modem ( which of course is always on ),
T2 with 100K pots through an ISA ACM card, IDE Drives, Win98 from a
clean install but with all updates from the MS site.

I'm using the FU mb bios, the latest bios/drivers for everything else.

I'm sure that GPL never used to do this. I'm wondering if it has
something to do with any of MS's recent Win98 updates that I've
installed.

I wondered if it was the Thriller but you have Voodoos so that seems
to rule that out.

What about the USB modem ? Could this be it ? Who knows ?

It doesn't seem to happen with any other race sim I have so it seems
to be GPL specific.

It can vary from just a quick flicker to the online like "flash" ones
gets that John Wallace mentions. But it happens offline. It can be
very destablising during an tight moment.

No answer I know but FWIW some more info for anyone who thinks they
have a cause / solution.

Best Regards

Phillip McNelley
