Don't know about the Viper but some graphic cards need the resolutions PLUS the
colour settings at those resolutions that the game uses to be set in windows
first. You only have to do this the once.
1) Run each resolution in Windows
2) each time change to the maximum refresh rate that your monitor can handle
3) keep settings for each one
4) revert back to your original windows setting.
You may have to restart your computer - especially changing colour settings.
When you start your game the new non-flicker settings will apply.
hope this helps
by the way the 'Optimal' setting for refresh rate may not work. Choose one from
the drop down list. i.e. 85Hz.

Basically, I posted the exact same question and the answers I was very
kindly given which have solved the problems are
1) Download the latest drivers for the card - go to www.diamondmm.com , here
you can download a app which will check your video drivers against the
latest on the web and download and install them for you. The download for
the drivers is about 3meg.
2) Download the OpenGL Beta 2 driver from Papyrus www.papy.com which allows
you to use OpenGL in the game instead of the crappy software video settings.
Follow the instructions in the readme.txt with the OpenGL driver to install
it.
3) Change the following setting in core.ini (found in the c:\sierra\GPL
folder), open it in Notepad and change the line
TossHighestMip = 0
to
TossHighestMip = 1
and
MirrorsEvery = 1
to
MirrorsEvery = 8
I've fiddled with this last setting and get on well with MirrorsEvery = 6 -
this setting basically makes the mirrors change in sections where 1 is
changing the whole mirrors at one time and 4 is a quarter, etc. If the
setting is lower the game only updates parts of the mirror at a time, so the
whole thing is updated less often. The nVidia cards inc. the Diamond Viper
seem to like this setting better using the OpenGL driver and you won't get
the screen flicker you get with this set at MirrorsEvery = 1
Good luck.

Time to repost a message from a guy called "billy" Depending on the driver version, this setting can be found in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\OpenGL], or [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NV When doing a fresh install, the settings won't appear in the registry So just in case there are people out there who are looking for this type

I just got the GPL demo yesterday and after seeing how good it is, I
plan on buying the game. There was a problem with the cars' mirrors
though, which I've learned has been a long-time issue with the tnt/tnt2
cards. I searched the internet for a solution and came across a message
here about using the 3.53 reference drivers with the "Use Block
Transfer" setting to fix the problem, which works perfectly. The only
problem is that those drivers suck hehe. I wanted to know how to enable
that setting with the 2.08 drivers (the best ones imo), and discovered
that this fix can be applied to any driver version by simply changing
the value of the "FlippingControl" setting in the registry to "0".

until an opengl game is run once.
of info (since the 3.53 fix is pretty recent), here it is. :)
I changed my Viper V770 drivers back to 2.08 and changed the core ini
TossHighestMip=1 and played with the MirrorsEvery=8 (also tried 6). Tried
all the different supported resolutions, didn't make a difference.
If I make the recommended changes in my registry file "flipping control=0"
will this cause problems with my other sims (DTR, Nascar 3 and Legends,
SCGT)?
This is the result of the MirrorsEvery setting in core.ini.
I use MirrorsEvery = 4 and find that sufficient to see what is going on
behind. Get 36 fps at 800*600 against 19 ai but turn a number of graphics
off (arms, dynamic lighting, specular highligts, mirrors=cars only, maybe
some more). System is Celeron 300A at 450MHz, 128 MB, Viper 550 (Riva TNT1
16MB)
I thusfar had TossHighestMip=0, but will try setting it to 1.
I don't know, but if you export the key in regedit twice, once for the value
0 and once for the value 2, you can change the filpping control value by
double clicking the right .reg file.

I also had the screen flicker, and still have them after effecting the
changes you suggested. I tried MirrorsEvery = 4 to 8, but to no avail.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks for any input!
