GPL--Screen Flickering

by Telso » Thu, 26 Aug 2004 13:02:21

I just tried my GPL setup which is unchanged since I last played it
successfully.

However, since I last used it, I have made a clean install of Windows
XP (it was already running under Windows XP, this was just a clean
install using the same CD).

Anyway, the menu screens all display fine but when I go into the sim
itself, I don't see the car's body displayed (though tires, shifter
and steering wheel are).  Various car parts, other cars, and the
grandstands are flickering.

There is a stable rectangle of nicely displayed GPL countryside in the
top left corner.

This is an NTFS drive, with Indexing enabled.

"Direct3D7" selected and this was the setting from my prior Windows XP
install.  Graphics (and all other) hardware is unchanged (ATI
All-in-Wonder).

Is there something obvious that I should fix, please?

My usenet service appears to drop a lot of posts -- if you could email
me also (telson -at- ameritech.net) that would be great.

Many thanks!

Morton,

This definitely sounds like a graphics card driver problem.  I'd
recommend that you get the latest ATI drivers and make sure that
you've uninstalled the older ones.

If only part of the car is appearing, make sure that the Detail Bias
slider in the GPL graphics menu is not set to 100%.  There's a big
difference between 100 and 99% and again from 75 to 74%.

Thanks, Bob.

I downloaded and installed the newest ATI drivers for my video card.

I tried the detail slider at various setting from highest to lowest.
I also tried the three resolutions (1024, 800, 640) and setting fewer
mirror and trackside details.

Unfortunately, none of these made a difference.  I thought at least
one would have--ah well.

Any ideas what I could try next, please?

Thanks again

The next things that come to mind are updating the monitor drivers,
but if other applications are OK, maybe not.  It's odd that car parts
are missing, since that's usually a symptom of running at 100% detail
slider, which causes the graphics card to be swamped.  This happens
with even fairly high-end cards.  Could be that your card is
over-heating.

I'd recommend that you first backup your GPL installation, then
reinstall the original off the CD or else get the new 2004 demo at
BlackHole Motorsports and test it before making any changes.  It could
be that something is corrupted.
