GPL 1.1 is worthless garbage

by mark jeangerar » Sun, 18 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Worse than that...

It took the best game I've ever had on my computer and turned it into worthless garbage. Which is worse. Because I know what I'm missing. With CPR I didn't know what I was missing, so it seemed OK. Now I have two versions of CPR on my machine and one is called GPL.

CONTROLLER LATENCY!!!

Which wouldn't be a problem except that when I go back to the box version of GPL I'll be playing myself because 1.1 won't allow box people to play with those who have 1.1. So, not only does 1.1 ruin GPL, it excludes those fortunate enough to avoid it from "enjoying" the game without it.

Sounds like a virus to me.

Instead of whining like a little girl, why don't you explain
what the real problem is?

What do you mean by controller latency? What controller
are you using? It could be a gamepad for all we know.

GPL 1.1 is worthless garbage

Believe it or not, my controller effeciency has improved massively since
1.1! I mean it!
At last I can control the car.

I have:
Pentium 2 at 466
ASUS V3400
128 MB SDRAM
T2 wheel

Up to now, all Papyrus sims were undrivable, because of controller latency.
GPL 1.1 patch fixed it for me, really.

Yeah, I was pretty pissed off to find out that my shiny new 'version' of GPL
had reduced my favorite sim to nothing more than an arcade.

If I turn the wheel now, and the front wheels on my virtual race car turn
one second from now, that is controller latency. Obviously there is latency
in every system, but in this case it's high enough to allow modulation (by
me) that I am unaware of until it's way too late. I know my rig well enough
and have spent enough time goofing around with GPL on it to know CL when I
feel it.

It's it.

Now, my original post still stands, and if you play sims yourself, you
should be able to read between the lines. My wife resents the 'girl' remark
and my gamepad kicks ass.***. :-)

GPL 1.1 is worthless garbage

I believe you. We've seen many reports claiming reduced frame rate with 1.1
but  the very first thing I noticed was wicked fast frame rates. Really.
It's screaming graphically. Naturally the second thing I noticed was that
the car was extremely fishy with tank slappers waiting at every bend.

What stumps me is, with all the variables that seem so destructive after the
patch, how on earth the original game ran so consistently on so many
different systems? Did they get really lucky over there? Or were they too
shortsighted on the patch? Focusing too *** a few things at the cost of
negligence to others?

I'm thinking that it's just running on too many different systems and
there's probably nothing anyone can do about that. But I wouldn't have
minded a patch that just plain left the controller alone. Of course, it's
the opposite for you....

P233mmx
Asus TX97
32ram
Diamond V1
Awe 64
TM ACM
TSW Sport

I think we can all guess how my system was overlooked in testing. But that
doesn't help me any. I'm reduced to racing off-line until I can get a new
rig. Personally, I have other things I want to spend my money on, and my GPL
was working just fine before they *fixed* it.

Looking at your system specs, you have a very similar system to
mine,  I have a P225mmx & voodoo1.   I'd be willing to bet the tank
slappers are comming from your slow cpu.  I can get smooth 36
fps only by turning off most graphic option.  When you start losing
frames, the handling suffers.
I'm thinking  any Pentium just can't keep up with gpl's number
crunching,  add to that your first gen voodoo and your not really
seeing gpl in it's best light...
as always, your mileage may vary  !

Understandable.

What wheel, CPU and RAM do you have? Do you race online?

I have never experienced this in any driving game. I haven't read that GPL
had this problem with anyone other than you. Did I miss some posts?

Yeah? I have to gamepads! And give your wife my apologies :-)
