XP and MS ForceFeedback Wheel

by John Hellingswort » Tue, 04 Mar 2003 01:36:56

Hi
I posted the other week......... but I'm still confused!!
Can someone tell me what Sidewinder software I need to download for the
Microsoft ForceFeedback Wheel, to run with XP.
I downloaded 3.02, but when going to install, I get a message telling me
that this version is incompatible with XP.
I can't see another version to load on the MS Sidewinder page.
Thanks

I just bought a new USB sidewinder FF wheel and sold my old gameport one. I
didn't find any solution to use FF in an acceptable way on the gameport with
XP.

To get the MS FF USB wheel working properly in WinXP do the following;

1. Install v4.0 of the Sidewinder software. It is not available for download
on MS' site, ask them why. When installing, ignore the warnings and keep
forging ahead with the install.
2. Reboot your PC.
3. Plug in the MS FF USB wheel.
4. Go race.

3.02 will NOT work with 2K or XP.  You cannot even install it.

You have to have 4.0 for 2K or XP.

4.0 only works with USB wheels.

You cannot download 4.0.

If you are one of the _rare_ people that got 3.02 with a USB wheel (and I
think that only happened to a few non-ff buyers) then you have to contact
Microsoft to get a 4.0 CD.

If you have a Gameport version of the wheel, you will never ever see a
compatible version of the SideWinder software released for your wheel and
the only thing you can do is use the SideWinder mini-driver included in
2K/XP.  Unfortunately without the SideWinder Profiler Software some games
cannot be made to work in any way.

Oh, and one other tidbit.  There are multiple versions of the 4.0 software,
and only the one that comes with your particular controller (wheel,
joystick, gamepad, etc...) will work with that specific device.  Yes, some
people actually have to install multiple versions of the 4.0 software to use
all of their SideWinder devices.

Yes, I agree it's a mess and Microsoft hasn't done anything about it in
years and doesn't appear to be in any hurry to do anything now.
