Canopus Corp - Rendition Card Claims ???

by Matt Howel » Wed, 04 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Could someone from Intergraph please comment on the claims Canopus Corp
is making about their Rendition based card. I found these claims at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/  Specifically I would like to know how they
can claim that their card is 20-30% faster than other rendition based
cards, and does 1024x768 true color. I thought all these cards were the
same.

Here's an excerpt from their press release:

Killer Graphics Accelerator

The Rendition? Vrit?-based TOTAL3D? graphics accelerator creates a new
quality and technology
standard for other 3D, Direct3D, and SVGA computer game focused graphics
card makers to aim for, offering
performance 20%-30% higher than other Vrit?-based graphics cards. [
The TOTAL3D? Vrit? card is
a 4MB PCI accelerator that does 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 true
color, and 1152x864 and
1240x1024 high color at non-interlaced, flicker free resolutions. ]

"The Rendition Vrit has been recognized since its release earlier this
year as the best 3D graphics processor
available to the high end consumer," explained Roger Hounshell, Vice
President of Canopus Corporation. "Its
programmable RISC architecture for the front end, 30 million
texture-mapped, bilinear filtered pixels per second
throughput, and full function 3D will keep it a winner for some time to
come."

"But lately its been getting an undeserved reputation for slow 2D,"
Hounshell continued. "We knew Vrit had
more in it than others were getting out of it; so we built Total3D to
show what Vrit is capable of. Producing
over 30 Winmarks at 1024x768x8 bit in 75Hz non-interlaced modes on
Pentium?166MHz computers,
TOTAL3D more than meets the industry's expectations for 2D Windows
acceleration. We didn't even need to
use a GDI hook to get this performance."

"We are very pleased with the introduction of the Total3D graphics card
from Canopus,' Jay Eisenlohr,
Rendition's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, said.
"They have chosen to take further
advantage of some of the additional features of the Rendition Vrit
architecture that I'm sure will electrify
gamers and mainstream users alike."

"The gamers we have let see this early, running side by side with our
competition, are calling Total3D a 'killer
graphics accelerator,'" said Jim Terzian, Director of Marketing at
Canopus. "I think Total3D will give the
competition a new definition for what 'killer' really means."

Canopus Corp - Rendition Card Claims ???

I believe Canopus and Sierra are both using newer/better optimized
Windows drivers for their Verite cards. Canopus developed the new
drivers for themselves and Sierra.
