Canopus Total 3D Rendition V1000 on a PII?

by Thad Failo » Sat, 17 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I have an oppertunity to buy a Canopus Total 3D under 40 buck.  Is it worth
it? Will it work with a Viper 330 AGP card?  How well does it work with GPL?
Any input would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks,
Thad Failor

        I've got a Total 3D and a PII-266.  Can run 19 opponents (at
1:13s at the Glen I need someone to beat :-) and decent graphics in
low 20s.  Going to upgrade to a Thriller in hopes of moving up to the
30s.

For your info I am running a celron300a o/clocked to 450.

I had my old 3dblaster (v1000) and a voodoo1 card in it.  The game was
consistently about 8-10 fps slower on the v1000 card. The voodoo1 card would go
up to 36 fps in sections but the rendition card never got close. Even the
voodoo would slow to 10 fps at the back of a 19 car grid though. I upgraded the
voodoo1 to a voodoo2 and got much better frame rates all round. I note that
even papyrus, those champions of the rendition chipset, don't recommend the
v1000 chipset for GPL.

I put the voodoo2 in 'cos i'm waiting for rendition to announce their new
RRedline chipset before replacing my 2d card.

I don't know what the viper 330 agp card is but I assume a combo 2d/3d card
like the pci total3d.. I don't think you could run two combo cards together.
But I'm interested in whether it WILL work :-)
